University of Southern Denmark has more than 20,000 students and more than 3,200 employees. The university offers teaching and research at 6 campuses situated on Funen, in the south of Jutland, west of Zealand and in the capital city – in Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, Slagelse and Copenhagen.
University of Southern Denmark has created an institution of higher research and education which provides first-class educational opportunities and is cooperation partner for both public and private businesses and organisations for providing qualified labour.
The University of Southern Denmark consists of five faculties.
Faculty of Engineering
Engineering – education, research and future. Our engineers and researchers are responsible for the technology of the future. The research of the Faculty of Engineering is rooted in interactions between basic research and applied research in a network which consists in part of other research units at the University of Southern Denmark and in part of outside research institutions, and which has a strong tradition of cooperation with the industry – nationally as well as internationally.

One of only three in Denmark, the Faculty of Health Sciences enjoys close cooperation with Odense University Hospital, industry and experts across the world. The Faculty’s expertise in public health offers students and researchers a first-class learning environment and the opportunity to play a key role in the treatment and prevention of disease.University of Southern Denmark has a strong image when it comes to health science research, education and communication. We take part in securing quality and development in the entire region of Southern Denmark. Consequently our research must reflect the future challenges of the hospital and health system. Our students are provided with qualifications and competencies in a way that makes it possible for them to meet these new challenges.

As the University’s largest Faculty, Humanities offer students and researchers an expansive and dynamic learning environment where new academic areas complement traditional studies. The Faculty’s strong interdisciplinary approach and progressive research have achieved recognition at national and international levels. The Faculty of Humanities covers a wide range of degree programmes and research fields which in one form or other deal with human beings and their relationship with the outside world. The focus and concern are on human thoughts, creative arts and communication from different perspectives and in many historical and geographic settings.
Department of Design and Communication
The Department of Design and Communication comprises research and degree programmes in Design Culture, International Business Communication, Information Studies, Tourism, Chinese and Library Science. The department is geographically present in Kolding, Sønderborg/Flensburg and Esbjerg. The department’s degree programmes in Tourism and Leisure Management, however, are in the process of being transferred from campus Esbjerg to Kolding.
At campus Kolding, Design and Design Culture are common denominators for many of the activities, stretching from historical studies of Design Culture over Service Design in subjects like Tourism and Library Science to Business Communication in design companies and Web Design. A group of researchers are engaged in Information Studies with specific emphasis on learning design, web 2.0 and 3.0, IT and ethics.
At the campuses in Sønderborg/Flensburg international business communication and intercultural degree programmes are in focus: English, German, Chinese, and Danish as a foreign language. Furthermore, the staff in Sønderborg cover a wide range of research activities within Chinese and other Asian cultures; conversation and interaction analysis; linguistics and intercultural communication.
Department of History
The Department of History is responsible for a wide range of research programmes in many different departments in the Faculty.
The department is also responsible for the degree programmes in History, Contemporary Middle East Studies, American Studies, Classical Studies, Religious Studies and Maritime Archaeology, and is also engaged in the disciplines in History and Social Science in the language and M.Sc. programmes.
A number of research centres are hosted by the Department of History, including Centre of American Studies, Centre of Cold War Studies, Centre for Maritime and Regional Studies, Centre for Medieval Literature, Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies and Centre for Welfare State Research.

Department of Language and Communication
The Department of Language and Communication covers a wide range of research activities within language and communication studies. Broadly concerned with investigating how humans create meaning, the department's research is characterised by a shared focus on linguistic and communicative forms and their concrete realisations. These are investigated within and across a range of research areas such as "Language Acquisition", "Cognition", "Interaction", "Organisational Communication", "Multimodality", and "Grammatical Description and Theory ". The common interests found within this diversity create a dynamism and synergy that allow for the continuous development of new interdisciplinary collaborations within the department and beyond.
The Department is involved in various degree programmes in European languages, including Business Languages and joint programmes in Economics, Language and Culture.
Department for the Study of Culture
Department for the Study of Culture
The Department for the Study of Culture has a broad range of research activities in cultural studies, education, literature, media studies and philosophy with a focus on interdisciplinary research.
The department hosts a number of externally funded projects and has a varied selection of research programmes which cover themes such as epistemology, ethics, philosophy of science, cultural analysis, communication of culture, Danish and foreign literature, comparative literature, media theory, digital audiovisual media, didactics, technology assisted learning, culture and learning, organization and management in education
The department works in close collaboration with national and international institutions and research partners e.g. museums, schools, high schools, university colleges and universities.
The department offers 17 degree programmes: Bachelors, masters and post graduate professional masters as well as in-service training for high school teachers.

The Faculty’s wide-ranging expertise, which includes research areas such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, offers you the chance to explore your area of interest alongside leading international specialists.

The researchers of Science conduct research in first life on earth, synthetic biology, medicinal products of the future and of course proteomics, where University of Southern Denmark is in the top-class of the world.
