Subject description

The subject consists of the mathematical and computational foundations of data analysis, with emphasis on the underlying theory to distill knowledge from large complex datasets. This includes but is not limited to models and algorithms for knowledge discovery, novel computational methods for big data management, optimization for machine learning, analysis of information networks and social networks, methods for explainable machine learning and AI, fairness, and transparency in learning systems.

The work primarily consists of research and supervision of doctoral students within the subject field. The assistant professor will be expected to establish and lead a research group in the subject field. In addition, it is expected that the assistant professor will apply for research funding, as well as establish industrial and academic collaborations both nationally and internationally. The position also includes developing and teaching first-, second- and third-cycle courses within the subject field.

The assistant professor will be given the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and acquire qualifications that can give eligibility for promotion to associate professor, for which higher requirements are set for eligibility (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Even those who have completed a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence before may, however, be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
