About the position

The NTNU University Museum is seeking an associate professor for a position in vertebrate evolutionary genomics. The appointment is permanent and is part of our aim to recruit ambitious and excellent researchers.
The position is central to the Department of Natural History’s strategy: Through the utilization of genetic information captured in natural history collections, we want to improve our understanding of evolutionary change and processes affecting biodiversity. Thus, we are looking for someone with experience and keen interests to conduct cutting-edge, collections-based research that advances fundamental knowledge about biological diversification in time and space.
You have a demonstrable interest in evolutionary biology and work in the fields of evolutionary genomics or a closely related academic discipline. Preferably, you have experience with the integration of vertebrate host and microbiome datasets in testing evolutionary and/or ecological hypotheses, as well as experience with curation of natural history collections and the use of scientific collections in genomic research. While working to develop an independent research program, you may benefit from the initial support of members of the Holomuseomics research group, whose overarching goal is to develop and utilize novel genomic methods, including paleo-genomic sequencing and metagenomics, to understand past and present biodiversity. These research activities are centered around natural history collections and often employ interdisciplinary approaches. You may also benefit from interactions with several other research groups at the Department of Natural History.

The NTNU University Museum, Department of Natural History employs 11 faculty staff, 5 researchers and 15 technical and administrative staff.

Duties of the position
It is expected that the successful candidate:
- Maintains an active, international research profile.
- Develops and submits competitive project applications to the European Research Council, the Research Council of Norway, and similar sources of national and international funding.
- Contributes to teaching at the NTNU Department of Biology and e.g. the Research School in Biosystematics (ForBio), or the Nordic Academy of Biodiversity and Systematic Studies (NABiS).
- Participates in public outreach activities.
- Will have the scientific governance for parts of our natural history collections.
As an Associate professor you must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of evolutionary genetics as outlined the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts .
- A Ph.D. within the field of evolutionary genomics or a closely related academic discipline.
- Scientific excellence documented through peer-reviewed publications in evolutionary genomics.
- Relevance of research focus in relation to the NTNU University Museum research strategy.
- Excellent skills in written and spoken English.
- Experience and success with project acquisition and management.

- Experience in metagenomics research in the context of microbiomes from vertebrate hosts.
- Experience in applying genomic approaches to scientific collections and/or other ancient biological remains.
- Experience with the curation of natural history collections.
- Experience with collaborative research using interdisciplinary approaches.
- Experience with teaching and supervision.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
As an Associate Professor code 1011 you are normally paid from gross NOK 604 900 – NOK 720 100 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, museums exhibitions and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.
If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.
