Doctoral student in acoustofluidics applied to protein crystallography
Third-cycle subject: Physics
The aim of the research project is to develop methods and design a device for acoustic focusing of protein crystals that can be integrated with state-of-the-art nozzles for serial crystallography. The position includes following tasks: development of microfluidic chips, ultrasonic transducers, acoustic cells, flow regulation, and integration of this hardware in existing 3D-printed nozzles for serial crystallography as well as existing microscopes for 2D-imaging of protein crystals. The project also includes participation in crystallography experiments at large-scale x-ray infrastructure (synchrotron, free-electron laser), which requires sample preparation of crystals in advance as well as subsequent data analysis. Work will be performed at the division of Biomedical and X-ray Physics (AlbaNova University Center) in close collaboration with the division of Biophysics (Science for Life Laboratory), both belonging to the department of Applied Physics at KTH. The project also requires frequent traveling to large-scale infrastructure and collaborators in Lund and Hamburg. We are looking for a PhD student that can work on the project long term and actively maintain the collaborations with MAX IV (Lund) and CFEL (Hamburg). A suitable background is a MSc degree with experimental work in applied physics, biophysics, microsystems or similar research areas. The position is fully financed for 4 years by VR RÅC.
Supervision: Jonas Sellberg (main supervisor), Martin Viklund (co-supervisor) and Björn Hammarström (co-supervisor) are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
- passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
- acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge
- performed experimental work in applied physics, biophysics, microsystems or similar research areas

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
