FULBRIGHT GRANTS FOR RESEARCH IN THE UNITED STATES

Published 2022-09-01

The Fulbright program is one of the most prestigious international exchange programs in  the world today with the main objective to increase mutual understanding between the  people of the United States and the people of other nations through the sharing of ideas,  knowledge, skills, and individual experiences.

Grants are intended for Swedish scholars who have already established affiliation with an  American university or research center but who have not yet begun their research in the  United States. Grants are available for all fields (see website for details).

Grants are awarded to applicants who intend to spend up to one year (with a minimum of  three months) in the United States. A transfer of visa sponsorship is often possible for  applicants intending to extend their research for more than one year. Scholars selected will  be issued a J-1 visa which requires them to return to their home country for a period of two years following their total grant time in the U.S.

Eligibility:
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent professional training or experience
  • Established affiliation with an American university or research center/institution
  • Swedish citizenship
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or stayed in the U.S. for an extensive period   may be given preference.
Persons having dual U.S. and Swedish citizenship or holding permanent residence in the  United States are not eligible. Applicants already in the U.S. are also not eligible. Scholars  who have not yet completed their doctoral degree at the time of application must present  evidence of completion of the degree prior to departure to the United States.

How to apply:
The application deadline is mid-January for grants beginning in the following academic  year. The online application is available from August 1 of each year. Details regarding the  application process and online application can be found on the Commission under the  Fulbright Scholar and Hildeman Fellowship awards.
