Postdoctoral researchers in human geography

Published 2021-06-21

Temporary position longer than 6 months

The Department of Geography seeks applications for 2 postdoc positions in human geography. The department has a broad research profile, both with regards to theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. Examples of research themes are labour supply, tourism, regional development, interregional migration, international migration, second homes, rural conditions, urban dynamics and adaptation to climate change.
The project and duties
Your work as a post-doc involves qualified research work in the subject of human geography where you will develop research with geographical perspectives on the ongoing re-industrialization of northern Sweden through the investments often referred to as part of a sustainable transition through green technology. The large industrial investments that are currently underway in several locations in northern Sweden are expected to pose major challenges in terms of conflicts of interest regarding natural resources and energy, but also in regard to planning as well as skills supply, not only in the affected locations but also for adjacent places. The position offers an opportunity to develop a research project within the framework of this theme based on different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. The research project could potentially focus on various aspects of this development that concern sustainability transitions, international and national labour migration, work, housing, leisure or gender equality, but could also be about, for example, the image of Norrland and how it affects and is affected by this development.

About employment
The employment contract starts in September 2021, for the duration of two years full time (up to 20 % could be devoted to departmental duties like teaching). The postdoctoral research fellow will be expected to be active in department research environment and participate in departmental activities.
In order to be qualified for the position, the person must have achieved a doctoral degree in geography with a focus on human geography or equivalent. The main assessment criteria for the appointment are documented research skills and academic track record. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this time period may be taken into consideration if special circumstances exist. Postdoctoral students who will teach or supervise should have relevant education.
We also want you to be flexible in your work; you should take initiative and be able to work independently. We want you to take full responsibility for the task at hand. The work also requires you to collaborate with others within and outside Umeå University.
Applications are accepted via system Varbi. The application should contain:
