The team you'll be part of

Strategy and Technology (S&T) lays the path for Nokia’s future technology innovation and identifies the most promising areas for Nokia to create new value. We set the company’s strategy and technology vision, offer an unparalleled research foundation for innovation, and provide critical support infrastructure for Nokia. The world renown Nokia Bell Labs, now part of S&T, has invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communication networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has resulted in nine Nobel Prizes, four Turing Awards, three Japan Prizes and a plethora of National Medals of Science and Engineering, as well three Emmys, two Grammys and an Oscar for technical innovations.

III-V Lab, a joint venture between Nokia Bell Labs, Thales and CEA/Leti, is driving innovation in microwave and optoelectronic components and subsystems to provide a technological competitive advantage to its stakeholders’ industrial applications, such as advanced telecommunications. III-V Lab conducts world-leading research on III-V material based photonic and high-speed electronics integrated circuits for next generation telecommunication systems. Our Advanced Photonic Integration team is involved in the development of photonic platforms based on III-V materials and III-V on Silicon Heterointegration. We have developed of wide variety of advanced integration techniques allowing us to monolithically integrate multiple functionalities such as optical gain, modulation and detection on a wide wavelength range.

Your mission

You will be involved in research projects aiming at pushing the performances of integrated photonic components and circuits for very high speed optical transmissions, access, data centers and more. Your main mission will be to conduct research on modelling and design of photonic components (lasers, modulators, SOAs, Photodiodes) and circuits on Indium Phosphide and III-V on Silicon technologies. You will also be involved in the characterization of these components to test their performance. Within the III-V Lab, you will work in collaboration with engineers working on epitaxy, wafer processing, characterization and packaging. You will closely interact with researchers working on high-speed electro-optic interfaces to allow optimal co-design of the photonic and electronic integrated circuits. In Bell Labs and the wider Nokia you will also interact with people working on optical transmission systems and the development of products.

Main responsibilities

  • Modelling different aspects of active and passive photonic components: optical mode propagation, high-frequency modulation, laser dynamics.
  • Design and layout of high performance III-V and III-V on Silicon components: high-speed phase shifters and electro-absorption modulators, lasers, amplifiers and photodiodes.
  • Electro-optical characterization of the designed components.
  • Contribution to technical and scientific development of the laboratory by publishing articles and participating in international conferences.
  • Close interaction with researchers responsible for the fabrication, packaging, characterization and system application.
  • Participation in international collaborative projects.
  • Interaction with business unit R&D departments.
  • Your Skills and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Physics (Photonics) or Electrical Engineering
  • Advanced knowledge in photonics, optoelectronics, semiconductors and laser dynamics
  • Experience in modelling and design of photonic components: Photon Design suite (Fimmwave…), Lumerical suite (Mode, MQW…), Ansys suite (HFSS…)
  • Experience with photonic circuits layout (Nazca, L-Edit…)
  • Experience in characterization of semiconductor optical modulator (EAM, MZM), semiconductor lasers or photodiodes is greatly appreciated
  • Proficiency with mathematical calculation tools (Python, Matlab…)
  • Strong written and spoken communications skills in English (notions of French is a plus)
  • Ability to understand complex physical phenomena
  • A creative mind enabling you to find disruptive technical solutions in a competitive field
  • A collaborative spirit allowing you to work in tight interaction with people with different competencies
  • What we offer

Nokia offers flexible and hybrid working schemes, continuous learning opportunities, well-being programs to support you mentally and physically, opportunities to join and get supported by employee resource groups, mentoring programs and highly diverse teams with an inclusive culture where people thrive and are empowered.

  • International teams with balanced composition
  • Work with colleagues from all over the world
