The Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a

tenure-track position as Associate Professor of Digital Industries
(salary group W2 with tenure track to W3)

at the Institute of Management at the School of Business, Economics and Society. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of six years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a full professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.

The endowed professorship for Digital Industries is funded by Bosch Rexroth AG via the Stifterverband and is intended to explore the interaction between digital technologies in industrial value creation on the one hand and the objectives of sustainable economic activity on the other, focusing on the business administration perspective. The Faculty expects well-founded research using methods of empirical social research that ties in with other research priorities at the faculty and FAU. The professor is expected to be willing to collaborate with existing professorships at the School of Business, Economics and Society and other faculties, in particular in the context of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in industrial engineering and management. The professor is also expected to play an active part in encouraging the internationalization of degree programs at FAU, in particular by offering teaching units in English. Candidates should have a background in economics and possibly engineering, and have an excellent academic reputation in digital industrial value creation after having published outstanding publications in the relevant journals. Furthermore, candidates should be actively involved in international networks and committees.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching. The professor is expected to conduct research and teach Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the area of digital industries. The professor is expected to conduct research in digital industrial value creation and will ideally focus on several of the following aspects:

  • Digital production and logistics (Industry 4.0 and industrial Internet of Things)
  • Digitalization of entire value creation networks and the resulting management strategies
  • Digitalization of industrial value creation tailored to the needs of specific sectors or companies
  • Sustainability of digital production and logistics
  • Digital industrial platforms and business models

The professor is expected to take part in interdisciplinary collaboration together with other departments at the University, with extramural research institutions and with industry.

Successful candidates should demonstrate an excellent academic track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as Assistant Professor).

The successful candidate should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.

FAU offers career development and an attractive initial package. Based on international standards and transparent performance agreements, FAU ensures a fair tenure-track evaluation process.

FAU offers an outstandingly productive research environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly community within a vibrant institutional network.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
