With the establishment of the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence Leipzig Center of Metabolism (LeiCeM), new opportunities will arise from 2026 at Leipzig University/Faculty of Medicine to develop new research areas in the field of metabolic diseases. Therefore, as of January 1, 2027, the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University is seeking to fill the above permanent professorship, initially funded by the DFG.
This professorship will be based at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, which is equipped with state-of-the-art medical imaging technology (including Fibroscan, ultrasound with elastography, DEXA, CT including spectral CT, MRI including spectroscopy and elastography). The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the research activities of the LeiCeM Cluster of Excellence within Leipzig University Medical Center. The position involves establishing a research focus in clinical metabolic imaging for the analysis and phenotyping of metabolic traits (body composition, fat distribution, tissue alterations resulting from metabolic diseases) and the direct or indirect visualization of metabolic activity.
Applicants are expected to provide evidence of experience through relevant publications and research activities (including successful acquisition of third-party funding) in image analysis using artificial intelligence methods (e.g., body composition analysis, radiomics) and, in particular, in functional and tissue-analytical MRI (e.g., spectroscopy, elastography, hyperpolarized MRI, contrast agents).
Requirements for appointment include a doctoral degree and habilitation, or equivalent scholarly achievements in the field, as well as substantial teaching experience. A university degree in medicine and board certification in radiology are fundamental prerequisites. Alternatively, candidates with a degree in natural sciences may be considered if their scientific work focuses on the research areas described above.
The rights and obligations of the position holder are defined by the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and the Higher Education Service Duties Regulation (HSDAVO). Applicants must meet the appointment requirements according to § 59 SächsHSG.
Board-certified radiologists will also be involved in patient care in accordance with the Act on University Medicine in the Free State of Saxony (Sächsisches Hochschulmedizingesetz) of May 6, 1999, at Leipzig University Medical Center, combined with senior physician responsibilities at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
In such cases, employment will be based on a non-tariff employment contract in accordance with the resolution of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) of November 19, 1999, with a base salary supplemented by performance- and success-related components.
The Faculty of Medicine is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching. Qualified female scientists are therefore expressly encouraged to apply.
Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if equally qualified.
Please submit your application no later than six weeks after publication exclusively via Leipzig University’s appointment portal.
