The postdoc researcher will conduct research within the European project RESHAPE. Tasks include research and the development of effective and efficient work in the consortium and publish and disseminate project findings.
The work will have a strong interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary character, combining participatory approaches and social learning dynamics with knowledge synthesis and mixed-methods empirical research (including multi-sited ethnography, life cycle assessment, input-output analysis, qualitative interviews, and quantitative surveys). Grounded on the characterization of the value chains of five food products in Europe—economically, socio-culturally, and from a governance perspective—the postdoc will collaboratively design and test innovative participatory strategies to bridge food-society disconnection and thereby support transformative change for sustainable and resilient future food systems.
Your duties
- you will develop research to advance the understanding of the social-ecological dynamics that shape the relationships between society and food systems, drawing on environmental assessments, knowledge synthesis exercises, interviews, and surveys, to identify key leverage points that could effectively shift the values associated to the food system and bridge the gap between the operational reality of food systems and the values that society assigns to them
- you engage in empirical research in the Dutch case study, centred around mapping and assessing Gouda cheese value chains (from large-scale industrial to small-scale traditional), including participatory strategy co-design
- you collaborate with the project partners towards making the case studies comparable
- you provide day-to-day assistance for the coordination of the project, facilitate collaboration with other researchers of the international RESHAPE project consortium and support project tasks and dissemination (including project meetings, conferences, deliverables)
- you publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals
Your profile
- you have a PhD in geography, environmental sciences or a related discipline
- you have a track record of peer-reviewed publications as well as the ability to initiate and complete original research
- you have knowledge of the literature and demonstrable expertise in applying state-of-the-art socio-ecological systems analysis methods
- you have the ability to help coordinate teamwork and conduct transdisciplinary work with local stakeholders
- you have excellent written and oral command of English. Proficiency in Dutch would be valuable
- you are available to start around May 15th, 2026

What do we offer?

- a salary of minimum € 3.546,00 (Scale 10) and maximum € 5.538,00 (Scale 10) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile Researcher 4. The exact salary depends on your education and experience
- a position for at least 0.8 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 1 year. Afterwards, the possibility of a 2-year expansion exists
