Our lecturers are expected to be able to teach a wide range of subjects within the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Culture, including courses in film studies, media aesthetics, media research, the philosophy of the humanities, global media cultures and current themes in film, television and media culture. Teaching duties are also likely to include supervising Bachelor theses.
This what you will be doing
- Under the supervision of the course coordinator, providing Bachelor's education within Media and Culture in the area of film, television and/or cross-media studies and in more general subjects of the programme;
- Coordinating practical matters relating to your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
- Marking (final) assignments, papers and (oral) exams; providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
- Supervising and examining Bachelor theses and providing other individual supervision to Bachelor students (mentoring and supervising internships);
- Attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the course coordinator.
This is what we ask of you
- At least a Master’s degree in film, television and/or media studies or a related field;
- Pedagogical and didactic competence (able to cater to students’ particular situations, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
- A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or, if this has not yet been acquired, then a willingness to begin the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
- You are able to teach in English and preferably in Dutch;
- If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
- Team spirit and a willingness to take part in the team’s activities and to collaborate within and beyond the teaching team;
- Organisational, administrative and time-management skills.
This is what we offer you
- We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2026;
- Excellent training and development opportunities, including participation in our Lecturer Development Programme and time reserved for professional development;
- Depending on relevant experience, the salary at the start of the employment is between EUR 3,546 and EUR 5,538 gross per month based on full-time employment for a 38-hour working week. In addition, you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable;
- The opportunity to attain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) and/or to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II.
This is where you'll be working
You will be working within an enthusiastic team of 30-40 academic colleagues. The team delivers teaching in the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Culture and various Master’s programmes in Media Studies. Within the team, you will be offered mentoring and guidance according to your experience and needs. In addition to the professionalization as a university teacher that you will gain from this position, you can also become an affiliated member of a research school and take part in reading groups, workshops, symposia, etc.
We prepare our students for a career as a researcher or as a critical professional capable of reflecting on professional practice and on their own role within that practice.
The Department of Media Studies
The Department of Media Studies consists of 6 teams, each focused on a specialization within media studies. It is one of the largest departments within the faculty, where all staff work closely together to conduct cutting-edge research and/or prepare our students for a career as a researcher or as a critical professional capable of reflecting on professional practice and on their own role within that practice.
Due to the department’s international character, the working language is a mix of Dutch and English.

The Faculty of Humanities encompasses a broad spectrum of progressive teaching and research. From the historic heart of Amsterdam, it maintains close links with numerous partners in the cultural, social and business sectors. As such, it forms part of a humanities hub of international standing.
The Department of Media Studies is seeking lecturers on a fixed-term (4-year) contract to teach in the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Culture, specifically within the specialisations Film Studies and Television and Cross-Media Culture.
Candidates should have expertise in theoretical, historical and cultural approaches within Media and Culture and the humanities more broadly, as well as knowledge of contemporary developments in media studies. Depending on the specialisation, succesfull candidates will either become members of the Film team or of the Television and Cross-Media Culture team.
