The Department of Microeconomics and Public Economics (MPE) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE), Maastricht University, invites applications for an Assistant Professor position. We welcome candidates with a strong research profile in microeconomics, public economics, political economy, urban economics, inequality, health economics, behavioural economics, and/or experimental economics or related fields.
Assistant professor position in Microeconomics and/or Public Economics

As Assistant Professor, you will contribute to research and education in the department. You are expected to strengthen and diversify the department’s research profile, publish in high-quality journals, and engage in external collaborations. In addition to research, you are expected to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. All teaching is conducted in English. We also expect you to apply for competitive research funding.

- Academic background – You hold a PhD in Economics or a related discipline.
- Strong research profile – You have a strong academic background, possibly already evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Funding potential – You can demonstrate the willingness or ability to secure external research funding.
- Teaching experience – You have experience in teaching at the university level, for example as the primary instructor or teaching assistant.
- Collaborative mindset – You value teamwork and collegiality, and you enjoy contributing to a positive, inclusive academic environment. You will help to create meaningful synergies and positive externalities within both the department and the School of Business and Economics.
What we offer
At Maastricht University, you’ll work in an international, open, and engaged environment. We offer:
- An 18 month contract with the prospect of a permanent contract based on mutual satisfaction.
- The position is graded in scale 11 according to UFO profile Assistant Professor, with corresponding salary based on experience with a gross monthly salary between €4.925,- and €6.682,- (based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week). You will also receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
- 29 vacation days (based on full-time), four additional days off (Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day), and the possibility to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
- Flexible working hours, a home office allowance, and the option to partially work from home.
