2 PhD positions within Environmental Engineering focusing on sustainable aquaculture

Publicerad 2024-03-14

About the position

Two PhD position in Environmental Engineering is available at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering  at the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The PhD positions are for a period of 4 years including research, teaching and other work duties.

Desired start date: 01.05.2024

The PhD projects are part of Sustainable aquaculture industry waste valorization through recycling (SEA-CYCLE) Project . The project is funded by The Research Council of Norway and aims to utilize waste and wastewater from the aquaculture industry by implementing circular economy principles in the management of aquaculture waste as part of the production processes.

Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing food production sector globally, while also carrying the potential for a significant environmental impact due to inadequate waste management practices within its production systems.

The primary objective of SEA-CYCLE is to develop knowledge that will help increase sustainable approaches in existing sludge and wastewater handling processes while minimizing pollution in the marine environment. The project proposes technologies to contribute to the circular approaches in the aquaculture sector while reducing environmental pollution via sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery techniques. In addition, SEA-CYCLE will evaluate the economic viability of these technologies from a societal point of view, considering both the environmental costs and benefits involved.

The successful candidates will work on:

PhD position 1: Valorization of Aquaculture Waste and Wastewater

PhD 1 will focus on exploring novel and sustainable technologies for managing aquaculture sludge, such as pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion. The candidate will also work on the recovery of nutrients from effluents to valorize and sustainably manage aquaculture wastewater, resulting in the production of biobased fertilizer and reduced marine pollution.

PhD position 2: Environmental and Socioeconomic Impact Analysis of Waste Management in Aquaculture Sector

PhD 2 will focus on assessing proposed waste management technologies in the SEA-CYCLE Project, which combines energy and nutrient recovery, and evaluating their environmental impacts using a life cycle analysis (LCA). The candidate will also work on evaluating the economic feasibility of these technologies from a societal perspective, considering both the environmental costs and benefits involved.

The persons appointed will be affiliated with the University’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the University with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD.

The successful candidates are expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral degree.

Main tasks

Both PhD candidates will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the advancement of sustainable technologies in aquaculture waste/wastewater management. The candidates are anticipated to undertake:

  • Review of the scientific literature and state-of-the-art on treatment technologies for aquaculture sludge and wastewater
  • Advanced statistical analysis and other data sciences techniques for the handling of the collected data
  • Perform high-quality scientific research and publish at least 3 publications in internationally scientifically indexed journals
  • Be a cooperative member of the project team and collaborate with other project partners
  • Present scientific results in internal research group meetings, project meetings and national/international conferences

The specific tasks of PhD position 1 will be:

  • Design, assembling and executing lab experiments to optimize energy recovery and biofertilizer production from aquaculture waste
  • Data collection from lab experiments
  • Analysis of wastewater samples

The specific tasks of PhD position 2 will be:

  • Literature review on the existing data on aquaculture waste and wastewater management
  • Modelling of Life Cycle Assessment and socioeconomic cost-benefit analysis of the technologies proposed in SEA-CYCLE project
  • Data collection based on the results from PhD position 1 activities and from aquaculture industry

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
