The postdoc position is part of the NWO-VIDI project “Fairness in Data-Driven Medical Technologies: Solidifying Regulatory Oversight Based on a Multidimensional Conception of Fairness”, complementing the PI (Mahsa Shabani) and a PhD candidate. The project runs from 2026 to 2031. The main aim of the overall project is to develop a comprehensive framework for fairness in medical AI and genomics, integrating ethical, legal, and social perspectives. By engaging patients, clinicians, and policymakers, the project aims to strengthen regulatory oversight and propose policy solutions that foster fair and responsible innovation. The postdoc will be part of the Law Center for Health and Life and embedded in the department of Public Law at the Amsterdam Law School.
This is what you will do
In your role as (post-doctoral) researcher, you will:
- Carry out and coordinate interdisciplinary research on how regulatory oversight mechanisms can be solidified with regard to fairness in data-driven medical technologies;
- Write and contribute to articles to be published in international peer-reviewed journals;
- Assist in the supervision of the project’s PhD candidate in their doctoral research;
- Develop a network of academic and non-academic partners for the purpose of developing grant proposals;
- Support and/or coordinate grant proposals in collaboration with the rest of the project team;
- Support and/or coordinate the organization of events for academia and societal partners;
- Present intermediate research results in internal discussions and external workshops and conferences.
This is what we ask of you
The position is open to researchers who have completed a PhD in one of the disciplines relevant to the project, with a particular preference for someone strong in using empirical methodologies.
In addition, you have:
- a demonstrated interest and publications in a field relevant to the project;
- experience in organizing and coordinating research projects;
- experience in supervising/mentoring other researchers;
- a demonstrated affinity with interdisciplinary research;
- a demonstrated ability to communicate complex findings to an audience with varied disciplinary background;
- a willingness and ability to work independently and to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team;
- a willingness and ability to organize events;
- a willingness and ability develop grant proposals and a network among academics and societal partners;
- fluency in spoken English, and excellent writing skills in English.
This is what we offer you
The position is for 0.9 fte. Depending on the disciplinary expertise of the candidate, options can be explored (but not guaranteed) for an additional 0,1 teaching time at one of the UvA Faculties. The position is offered for 1 years with the option (by excellent performance) to extend this by 3 years.
The gross full-time monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for (post-doc) Researchers at Dutch universities, scale 11 (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) ranging from €4.728 to €6.433 gross per month (full-time equivalent). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus[MS2] .

You will be part of a project funded by an NWO-VIDI grant and running 5 years, as part of a team consisting of the principal investigator, one postdoctoral researcher (you), one PhD researcher, in collaboration with other researchers in our team. The project team is based at the Law Center for Health and Life, at the Law Faculty of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
