About therole

AsAdvanced Research Assistant you will be responsiblefor:
Technicalleadership

  • Planning organising andscheduling your workload in line with team priorities. Provideguidance and support to less experienced team members as requiredto ensure quality and timeliness are maintained across theoperation.
  • Perform sample QC extractionslibrary preparation and sequencing as well as routine laboratoryprocesses including interpreting results to a pass/fail level.Recognise and flag anomalies as they arise to senior staff andassociated stakeholders troubleshooting and identifying solutionson each occasion.
  • Maintain equipment to ensureit is fit for purpose and operating within set validation criteria.Ensure service level agreements are adhered to and proactivelyraise all operating issues.
  • Contribute to thehousekeeping tasks within the lab areas by following weekly/monthlycleaning and maintenance regimes; take responsibility for all tasksbeing completed on time.
  • Monitor lab resources;take responsibility for stock levels being maintained to prescribedlevels and make recommendations to senior staff on consumable stocklevels to support an efficiently runoperation.
  • Working in collaboration with seniorstaff and the Team Leaders fostering a positive workingenvironment. Respond positively to change and flex to meet thechanging demands of theInstitute
  • Solutionfocused
  • Proactivelycontribute to process improvement within the team using prescribedmethodologies. Champion the application of continuous improvementprinciples (5S Kaizen etc.) within the lab and support theimplementation of new techniques into the team portfolio incollaboration with the RD team.
  • Show compliancewith quality policies SOPs and HS procedures. Ensure allindividuals in the lab adhere to existing risk assessments and SOPsat all times and update / prepare new documents whenrequired.
  • Take responsibility for your trainingrecord and ensure it is up to date at all times. Train and coachnew / less experienced members of staff providing technicaltheoretical and practical information and work with senior staff toagree on any new training or scheduling of refresher training foryourself and others.
  • Review and update SOPs andRisk Assessments in accordance with current governance. Prepare andcontribute to writing new documents whenrequired.



Aboutyou

Toexcel in this role you should have the following skills andexperience:

  • BSc in abiological science or equivalentexperience.
  • Excellent knowledge and practicalexperience in relevant techniques to therole.
  • Previous work experience as atechnician/research assistant in alaboratory.
  • Ability to correctly interpretscientific data.
  • Excellent organisational andplanning skills in managing competing priorities in a busyenvironment.
  • A high level of interpersonal andcommunication skills.
  • A team player attitudewith strong professional ethos demonstrating an approachableattitude and willingness to shareinformation
  • Proven track record of consistentdelivery in terms ofvolume/speed/quality.
  • Computer literate:Microsoft Office programs including Word andExcel.
  • It is desirable but not essential foryou to have experience in training and mentoring LIMS andautomation and highthroughputassays
