JOB DESCRIPTION
Our faculty is investing in new academic staff in line with the quality agreements. In the Department of DEvelopment and Education of youth in Diverse Societies (DEEDS) at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Utrecht University we are looking for an assistant professor (m/f/x).

In terms of teaching, we are looking for a candidate who can contribute to our Bachelor's, Master's and Research Master's programmes, specifically with respect to development, parenting and education of children and youth with an intellectual or physical disability, or chronic illness. We are looking for a colleague who can contribute to a vision in our programmes that views disability from a system and participation perspective, and that strives to optimize communication between different care systems in service of the optimal development of children and youth.

In terms of research, we would welcome a colleague who will strengthen the research profile of our department. Our aim is to contribute to the optimal development and participation of all children and youth in increasingly diverse societies. We link their development and learning to social issues such as equity, cultural and linguistic diversity, and participation and examine how pedagogical and educational contexts and facilities can be optimized to improve the development and participation opportunities for children and youth. We are looking for a colleague who has expertise in one or more of the following areas: participation of children and youth with a disability in all areas of life, partnership of families with their surrounding systems to develop new models for strengthening the agency of families in which children and youth with a disability are growing up, and the role of (parental) beliefs and empowerment in order to optimize the development of children and youth with a disability.

The department's research is positioned in the UU research programme Education and Learning and is embedded in several central strategic themes and focus areas of Utrecht University: Dynamics of Youth and Institutions for Open Societies, Migration and Social Change.

The position involves 60% teaching activities and 40% research time. Core tasks will include contributing to:
  • the Bachelor's and Master’s degree programmes of the Pedagogical Sciences curriculum;
  • the acquisition of research funding for the benefit of the research programme;
  • supervision and conducting research within the scope of the research programme;
  • dissemination of research results to the research community, societal partners and the general public.

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague (m/f/x) who subscribes to the values above and meets the requirements below:
  • You are a team player and have strong interpersonal skills for contributing to a positive work environment and open science.
  • You hold a PhD degree in the field of pedagogical sciences, or a similar field that covers the domain of youth and education as described above.
  • You have affinity for or experience in the clinical field of children and youth with disabilities.
  • You like to independently initiate, develop, and carry out high quality research.
  • You have published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • You are able to acquire external research funding.
  • You aspire to conduct socially relevant research.
  • You have good and proven skills in teaching Bachelor's and Master’s degree programmes.
  • You have experience in co-developing and co-coordinating academic courses.
  • You are able to provide inspiring lectures, have an eye for the innovation of teaching methods and you can apply your own research expertise to teaching, as evidenced by positive teaching assessments.
  • You hold a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) from Utrecht University or another Dutch or foreign university, or you are willing to acquire this qualification in the near future.
  • You are fluent in Dutch and English.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
We offer a position (0.8 - 1.0 FTE), initially for 18 months. After a good evaluation of the initial appointment, the position becomes permanent. We also provide an attractive working environment and a vibrant research climate with ample opportunity for further professionalization. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between € 3,821 and € 5,943 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
