About our Team
The Department of Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics is part of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, which also includes the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science. The School has developed a challenging and supportive environment for our undergraduates who go on to excel in a diverse range of careers.
The Department of Mathematics forms part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research institute bringing together the mathematical research activities at Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh. The Department is also a co-founder of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). The ICMS stimulates and promotes the mathematical sciences through organising and hosting diverse international workshops and conferences. Its vibrant events programme attracts leading mathematical scientists from the UK and internationally - connecting mathematical communities across the world and greatly enhancing the mathematical environment in Edinburgh.
The Mathematical Sciences team across the two mathematical departments teaches programmes in Edinburgh, Malaysia and Dubai, and the core 1st and 2nd year courses offered by the Mathematics Department are followed by students in both the Mathematics and the Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics Departments. As such, most teaching in early years involves cross-school and cross-campus teaching teams. The department also provides service teaching of mathematics to engineers and scientists across the wider university.
The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences has an Athena SWAN Bronze Award and is committed to an equality charter, which includes having a diverse and inclusive workforce, and to offering equality of opportunity to all. We encourage applications from under-represented groups, and we welcome requests for flexible working arrangements and endeavour to accommodate them, whenever possible.
