JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious, mid-career Associate/Full professor with a proven track record in the field of cellular protein homeostasis. We are specifically seeking a candidate with expertise in the protein quality control systems responsible for managing the response to protein folding stress, and a keen interest in understanding of how these systems become compromised during aging to cause age-related diseases.

REQUIREMENTS

- Has a proven track record of conducting high quality and creative fundamental research.
- Pursues an independent line of research, using innovative approaches, research model systems and/or technologies.
- Has been successful in acquiring external funding.
- Has a broad (international) network.
- Has a collaborative spirit and interest to seek synergy with other research groups in BMS, UMCG and the RUG.
- Is a passionate teacher who can effectively convey knowledge of the field to new generations of professionals.
- Is an inspiring leader, able to build and coach a research group.

Additional information:
BMS is part of the multidisciplinary research cluster Biomedical Sciences and Technology of the UMCG, together with the European Research Institute for the Biology of Aging and the Department of Biomedical Technology. Research programs of BMS are embedded in the UMCG Research Institute “Mechanisms of Health Ageing and Disease” and two recently awarded National Gravitation Programs, one related to protein quality control mechanisms.

The UMCG is an equal opportunity and family-friendly employer, values diversity, and is responsive to the needs of dual-career couples.

DEPARTMENT

Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS)

The Department of Biomedical Science (BMS) is embedded within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen (RuG). Research at BMS aims to discover molecular mechanisms underlying age-related diseases. Our goal is to identify and target these mechanisms to prevent or delay disease and promote healthy ageing. Our research teams are working with different model systems and state-of-the-art technology platforms. We work in close collaboration with basic, preclinical, and clinical departments of the UMCG and the RuG, and with various local, national, and international private partners to accelerate the translation of our discoveries. BMS is housed at the Healthy Aging campus where Academia and Life Sciences companies meet and located in central Groningen, a University town in the northern part of the Netherlands.
