Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Computational Ecology

About the role

This 12-months fixed-term role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of Biosciences’ People and Nature Lab at UCL East. We seek a computational ecologist with expertise in cutting-edge machine learning for ecology to help train the next generation of data-driven ecologists while advancing research at the intersection of computational methods and biodiversity conservation.

Based within the Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE), this role is central to our cross-disciplinary MSc Ecology & Data Science programme. You will lead hands-on machine learning workshops, supervise student research projects, and collaborate with colleagues across UCL to enhance interdisciplinary learning. You will also work closely with external partners, alumni, and industry professionals to expand career development opportunities for students.

The People and Nature Lab brings together expertise from Biosciences, Computer Science, Geography, and The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment to tackle pressing challenges in biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable ecosystem management. This role is eligible for hybrid working, with a minimum 60% on-site presence at UCL East, a state-of-the-art campus dedicated to pioneering environmental solutions.

About you

You will have a doctoral degree in a relevant field and a strong research background in cutting-edge machine learning for ecological challenges. With experience in research-led teaching and student supervision, you will bring strong computational skills in ecological modelling or biodiversity monitoring and a proven ability to mentor students. You will be an excellent communicator and collaborator, able to engage across disciplines, and committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the next generation of ecological data scientists in a dynamic and supportive setting.
