Clinical Senior Lecturer – Year 4 Oncology Block Lead

Background

The Manchester MB ChB programme delivers a successful and innovative undergraduate medical programme to over 2200 students. The programme uses a blended teaching and learning approach based on adult learning principles emphasising experiential learning, subject integration and reflective practice at its core. In the earlier years of the programme, delivery focuses on small group problem-based learning, reinforced with early clinical experience; later years are immersed in learning through clinical placements in the NHS. Later years of the programme comprises a series of clinical placements and structured learning opportunities that broaden knowledge and skills through the medical specialties.

The Block Leads will be part of the MBChB Programme Teaching and Learning Academic Team supporting the Year 4 Lead, in ensuring delivery of the Year 4 programme is to the highest standard. Block Leads should have a good working knowledge of the MBChB and will work closely with the Associate Academic Lead for Year 4 shaping and being actively involved in the continuous evaluation and improvement of the Year 4 programme.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Lead and Associate Lead for Year 4 to ensure the successful delivery of the MBChB programme
  • Have prime responsibility for the academic content and learning materials associated with their specialty for Year 4 MBChB and for this
    • Be required to ensure all relevant content has specific and accurate learning outcomes
    • Ensure the learning outcomes are mapped to the curriculum map and remain accurate and current
    • Be required to ensure that all e-learning materials are current and accurate prior to the commencement of each academic year
    • Support equity of learning for all students in Year 4 for their respective block
    • Provide content guidance and teaching resources for their respective block, acting as the liaison with the clinical placement supervisors at all sites delivering that block
    • Take a leading role in the development of content and facilitate question writing groups in liaison with the Year 4 Associate Lead for Assessment
    • Support the Year 4 Lead through the Assessment emendation group for their specialty block
    • Work with the assessment team to ensure accurate mapping of assessment materials to the taught materials in Year 4 under the direction of the Year 4 Lead and Associate Lead

Meetings

The Block Leads for Year 4 will be required to attend the monthly Year 4 Teaching and Learning Working Group (T&L) Meetings, two Year 4 academic team emendation and wash up meetings for assessments.

Staff development

Ensure attendance at all appropriate Year 4 Staff development training.

Person Specification

Essential attributes

Practicing physician/surgeon with a primary medical qualification on the specialist register

Evidence of leadership qualities with a track record of involvement in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education

Have an understanding of, or work towards an understanding of medical education theory (through continuing professional development)

Able to effect organisational change through engagement at a local level with good interpersonal skills

Able to work with key stakeholders in shaping and being actively involved in the continuous evaluation, development and improvement of MBChB programme teaching and learning for Year 4

Good organisational skills with the ability to work alongside administrative staff to support high quality teaching and supervisors

Be collegiate and work through the sharing and implementation of good practice

Enhance the experience for students throughout the programme by improving the quality of year 4

Desirable attributes

  • Current Clinical Placement Supervisor for one of the Clinical Education Providers (CEPs) for the Manchester MBChB Programme
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education (PGcert, Diploma or MSc)
  • Experience in medical education processes
  • Evidence of successful implementation of organisational change and quality improvement
