FULBRIGHT GRANTS FOR RESEARCH IN THE UNITED STATES 

The Fulbright program is one of the most prestigious international exchange  programs in the world today with the main objective to increase mutual  understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other  nations through the sharing of ideas, knowledge, skills, and individual experiences.  

Grants are intended for Swedish scholars who have already established affiliation  with an American university or research center but who have not yet begun their  research in the United States. Grants are available for all fields (see website for  details).  

Grants are awarded to applicants who intend to spend up to one year (with a  minimum of three months) in the United States. A transfer of visa sponsorship is  often possible for applicants intending to extend their research for more than one  year. Scholars selected will be issued a J-1 visa which requires them to return to their  home country for a period of two years following their total grant time in the U.S.  

Eligibility:  

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent professional training or experience  Established affiliation with an American university or research  

center/institution  

  • Swedish citizenship  
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or stayed in the U.S. for an extensive  period may be given preference  

Persons having dual U.S. and Swedish citizenship or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible. Applicants already in the U.S. are also not eligible.  Scholars who have not yet completed their doctoral degree at the time of  application must present evidence of completion of the degree prior to departure to  the United States.  

How to apply:  

The application deadline is January 7, 2025, for grants beginning in the following academic year. The online application is available from August 1 of each year.
