Lecturer Grade F £40,247 to £45,163  per annum

Lecturer Grade G £46,485 to £55,295 per annum

The Role

 

Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Lecturer (F or G Grade) in Law to join our forward thinking, inclusive Russell Group Law School that seeks to embed its values in all that it does: Challenge; Social Justice; Compassion; Wellbeing; Excellence; Responsibility; and Respect.

 

We are looking for a passionate researcher in the area of Criminal Justice or Critical Criminology (with a preference for research specialisms in racial and/or gender justice or challenging injustice within criminal law). Your research should engage with socially relevant and important questions that address current and future problems. A willingness to collaborate across legal fields and disciplines is also desirable. An ability to contribute to the teaching of substantive criminal law and law and gender is essential.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching & Learning

  • To provide high quality research led teaching activity
  • To supervise dissertation students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level (commensurate with experience)
  • Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
  • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with university standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated

Research

  • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
  • Contribute to the research profile of Newcastle Law School by publishing high quality outputs
  • Pursue external funding commensurate with experience
  • Potential to demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work
  • Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students

Other

  • Operate as an active citizen in the Newcastle Law School community
  • Have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an understanding of how individual  behaviour can contribute to a positive research and education culture
  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, research and/or engagement
  • Take responsibility for a defined citizenship or leadership role
  • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
  • Ability and skill to develop sustained relationships, including with internal colleagues, external partners and organisations

The Person

The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Lecturer Grade F

  • Ability to teach substantive criminal law and contribute to the teaching of law and gender is essential. Ability to contribute to teaching law of evidence desirable.
  • Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students
  • Ability to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning
  • Evidence or potential for internationalising the curricula
  • Ability to develop and secure research funding 
  • Experience of or capability to publish international and world-leading research
  • Evidence of a developing national/international research profile
  • Evidence of ability to contribute to the research community of the Law School
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary working (Desirable)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
  • Demonstration of successful team working
  • Personal resilience in a context of change and fast paced environment
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to providing evidence of your previous experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the follow criteria:

  • A sustained national research profile and evidence of an established/developing international research profile
  • Evidence of developing and securing grant capture (desirable)
  • Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
  • Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources, and activities for students
  • Ability to undertake a management and leadership role
  • Evidence of active academic citizenship
  • Evidence of sustained teaching in the field of criminal law or law and gender.

Desirable

  • A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
  • Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students 

Qualifications

Lecturer Grade F

  • A good Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
  • PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject

Desirable

  • A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area 
  • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience)

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F candidates must also meet the following criteria:

  • Completed PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
