Publicerad 2024-12-17

About the role

We are offering a full-time permanent academic post at Lecturer level (Grade 8) in experimental petrology or mineralogy. The specific research of the successful candidate could focus on any sub-field of earth’s interior petrology or mineralogy including, but not limited to, crustal, volcanic, magmatic-hydrothermal or subduction zone processes, high temperature ductile deformation, deep volatile cycling, mantle geochemistry, mineral or melt properties and deep Earth processes.

UCL Earth Sciences has a strong tradition of research into the materials in the solid Earth. As such, our experimental laboratories host a broad range of equipment designed to study the physical and petrological properties of rocks and minerals. Our laboratories are supported by technical staff with decades of design, mechanical engineering, electrical and systems control knowledge allowing us to build and maintain unique capabilities that constantly push the frontiers. We expect the successful applicant to embed themselves within our lab community, aiming to use or extend our facilities to realise their own ambitious research programme. Their research focus could fall anywhere within the fields of igneous or metamorphic petrology provided it incorporates a significant experimental component which will complement and extend our existing lab community and their capabilities. The appointed person will build links across the department, both within the experimental lab groups and those throughout ES and UCL more widely.

About you

The successful candidate will have a PhD, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate discipline that must have been awarded at the time of application.

Expert knowledge and expertise in any area of Earth’s interior petrology or mineralogy provided it includes an experimental element is essential and should be evidenced by a strong publication record and/or other indicators of academic reputation.

Knowledge, skills and desire to independently lead a program of lab-based research at UCL and the ability to deliver inspiring lectures to our diverse student community is essential.
