About the Job

Part time: 13.5 hours per week

Fixed term for 12 months

Interview date: Friday 20 September 2024

The University of Northampton is seeking an inspirational Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Health. You will join a growing, dynamic, and collegiate team with an embedded culture of student-focused teaching and high impact research.

The post holder will primarily be responsible for delivering high quality teaching to our students and assisting in the design and development of innovative and inclusive teaching materials on our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise science programme and our health sciences programmes. Applications are welcomed from individuals with experience of exercise physiology, health physiology and public health interventions.

This is an exciting time to join our University following our relocation in September 2018 to a new purpose-built, town-centre campus designed to adapt to 21st century teaching and the ABL model. We are looking to recruit individuals who share our passion of supporting students’ academic progress through high quality teaching, feedback, and academic support. We would like to receive applications from individuals who share our commitment to developing student belonging and creating an excellent and inclusive student experience.

As an academic, you will also be expected to contribute to the research and scholarly output of the subject area and work collegiately with other researchers within the Faculty and wider University. Research and scholarship are supported through our research centres, mentor scheme, and leave for scholarly activity.

We want you to be able to carry out your work in a way that best supports UON and our students, but also you as an individual. We understand this may vary between different areas of the university as well as from one person to another. With Smarter Working you can work with increased flexibility, if you would like to, which can facilitate greater freedom and autonomy.

However, there will be an expectation to carry out teaching duties appropriate to the session type, meetings with staff and students, and personal tutor support should this require a physical, on-campus presence at various times.

About You

You will have academic and/or professional background in exercise physiology and / or health physiology and/or public health interventions with the ability to translate theory to practice and create learning environments to develop students’ knowledge, skills and professional competencies relating to health interventions and exercise prescription.

An ability to teach across the wider subject area and contribute to other programmes will be considered an advantage.

The successful candidate will be ICT literate and have experience in leading and teaching modules in HE settings. You will be highly disciplined, organised, supportive, and able to work collegiately within a team. A successful track record of research publications, successful grant applications, and/or generation of commercial income, would be welcomed.

Importantly, we are looking for individuals who are not only team players, with academic and industry expertise, but who will own and live the university values.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree qualification or equivalent in relevant subject
  • Master’s degree in relevant subject
  • Professional Recognition as HEA Fellow (D2) or teaching qualification recognised by HESA, or willingness to obtain within an agreed timescale
  • Desirable:

  • Doctorate in relevant subject, completed or within 12 months of completion
  • Faculty

The Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology (FAST) comprises approximately 3,000 students, five subject areas and a diverse range of research centres. The Science subject area is home to the Sport & Exercise, Life Science, Environmental and Geographical Science subject groups.

Students and staff work closely with key stakeholders on projects that deliver social impact, improve the staff and student experience, and enhance the reach and reputation of the university. Examples of current projects:

    About Us

Come to the University of Northampton and you will see that we do things a bit differently.

We are one of the youngest universities in the UK but we are already leading the way in adding value to society, which we call social impact. We have won multiple awards for our work in this area, among others, but what matters the most to us is ensuring that our students and graduates have the opportunity to make their mark on the world too. That’s why we were the first university in the UK to be named as a Changemaker Campus in 2012.

We want to break the mould of what Higher Education can be. This has led us to build a whole new University from the ground up that is designed to reflect the way that students actually learn rather than the way they are expected to learn. Waterside Campus opened in September 2018.

Our commitment to transforming lives and inspiring change is at the heart of all that we do.

    Right to Work

All candidates will be asked to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK at interview. Due to the requirements laid out by UK Visas and Immigration regarding Right to Work in the UK, the University can only accept applications from individuals who currently have a status allowing them to work in the UK for this position. Due to this criteria we regret that we are unable to offer sponsorship at this time.

    Equality

We welcome applications from underrepresented groups.
