Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Paediatric Postgraduate Teaching Fellow to develop paediatric education resources at Whittington Health NHS Trust and to work across the sector with our new Integrated Care System (ICS) - North London Partners.

This is a post with the aim of providing training in clinical paediatrics and education. The appointee will also gain experience of education transformation across the ICS. It is an opportunity for a trainee who wishes to take some time out of full-time clinical training to develop themselves as an educator and to learn about systems transformation in the NHS. We invite applications from those with a strong interest in teaching and education in paediatrics and child health.

Post start date - September 2025 - September 2026.

Main duties of the job

This is a 1-year post. The appointee will spend 60% ( of their time in non-clinical work and 40% ( WTE) in clinical training, with no out of hours commitments. Of the non clinical work, 20% of this will be focused on undergraduate teaching, while 40% will be on post graduate teaching. They will be encouraged to develop cross trust education and training in the North London sector. The appointee will be encouraged to make use of the research and clinical training resources within Whittington Health and local clinical networks.

The post holder may choose to do out of-hours work alongside this post (through our internal locum agency), but this is not compulsory.

Job responsibilities

Teaching and Education (60% of post 20% UG, 40% PG)

The postholder will focus on enhancing teaching and training at Whittington Health in paediatrics and child health, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. They will work closely with the undergraduate teaching fellow and share the responsibilities of this post. They themselves will be expected to contribute to postgraduate teaching both locally and regionally across the North London sector. They will develop their own teaching skills and support the development of these skills in others. They may also contribute to undergraduate teaching.

There will be flexibility with regards to the specific projects undertaken and these will be discussed with the postholder. The overarching role of the postholder is to support the multidisciplinary team across the sector to provide high quality patient care through education and training. Broadly, the postholder will explore the education and training needs of clinical staff managing paediatric patients. They will solicit the views of local paediatric patients and their carers on how to improve patient care. These approaches will entail a mix of qualitative assessment and analysis, including interviews, focus groups and thematic analysis. They will develop and design multidisciplinary, multiprofessional education and training events and opportunities, to upskill and refresh clinical practice and knowledge.

The postholder will build a timetable of milestones to achieve over the 12 months of the post and will feedback progress monthly on project scoping, initiation and delivery to HEE using the highlight report.

The postholder will be expected to build a clinical educational portfolio. They will be supported to develop a personalized development plan to include suitable learning opportunities. They will be encouraged in the pursuit of a higher diploma or degree in Medical Education. They will be fully supported to attend leadership programmes provided by HEE.

Clinical responsibilities and training (40% of post)

The postholder will undertake two day of clinical work per week. The clinical responsibilities of the post will be tailored to the experience and / or training needs of the appointee but are likely to be placed in the general paediatrics clinic or the paediatric emergency department or the neonatal service. In all these clinical training settings, the postholder will have clinical supervision. We would particularly welcome paediatricians with the leadership and clinical skills to develop new models of service delivery.
