The UCL Division of Medicine and Boehringer Ingelheim are offering a fully funded 4 year PhD studentship within UCL Respiratory Medicine and the Department Immunology and Respiratory within Boehringer Ingelheim to a highly motivated candidate. The main purpose of this studentship is to explore mechanisms by which epithelial-derived aberrantly glycosylated MUC1 contributes to interstitial lung disease pathology, and to develop novel clinical tools which show potential in countering these processes whilst furthering our understanding as to how current therapies work.

About You

The main duties and responsibilities are to undertake original academic research towards the award of a doctoral degree. For the doctoral award, research students need to have demonstrated the creation and interpretation of new knowledge through original research, or of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline and merit publication, and to adjust the project design in the light of unforeseen problems.

The successful candidate will have:

  1. Experience in a variety of techniques relevant to cell biology, such as tissue culture, flow cytometry, organoid culture, Western blot, RT-PCR.
  2. Knowledge of immunology (essential), epithelial biology (desirable), and glycobiology (desirable).
  3. Experience of working in a team environment.
  4. Experience of working independently.
  5. Knowledge of common software packages, such as MS Office.
  6. Knowledge of common statistical methods.
  7. The flexibility to travel to and stay in Germany for up to 12 months in year 3 of their studies.
