Postdoc position in urban CO2 flux observations and modeling

Publicerad 2024-09-19

The Atmospheric Sciences research group (https://duw.unibas.ch/en/research-groups/atmospheric-sciences/) is an international working group at the Department of Environmental sciences of the University of Basel. Our group operates urban micrometeorological towers in Basel since 1992, studying surface energy and CO2 fluxes. Our research involves the combined use of in-situ observations (i.e. eddy covariance, radiation balance, meteorology), remote sensing data and geospatial modeling. We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic and highly motivated postdoc to join our team and conduct research on urban CO2 fluxes using eddy covariance and bottom-up modeling approaches.

Your assignments

You will be involved in our new Horizon project CLMS-Cities (starting on January 2025), which aims to develop a new urban CO2 emission product for the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS). Within the project, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of partners across Europe, contributing to the development of a novel bottom-up methodology for estimating urban CO2 emissions and using urban eddy covariance observations for the method evaluation. You will also be involved in the standard research activities of the group, and specifically in the operation of our micrometeorological towers, including the data acquisition, database management and data processing procedures. Assistance in teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels (in English or German), depending on research experience, and support in student supervision will also be part of your tasks.

Your profile

Applicants should hold a PhD in environmental sciences, meteorology, physics, biology, or related disciplines. Very good coding skills (e.g. Python, R, or Matlab) and experience in computational methods and numerical analysis are required. Research experience in the fields of micrometeorology or urban climatology, as well as hands-on experience on eddy covariance applications, would be important advantages. Excellent command of English, oral and written, is required. Basic German is an advantage.

We offer you

We offer a stimulating research environment in an international research group with excellent infrastructure for your research. Our group is involved in several international and national research projects and associations, offering multiple networking opportunities. The position will initially be for 2 years, with the option of long-term extension. The workload of the position is 100 %, but could also be reduced to 80 %. Salary and social benefits are provided according to Swiss standards and Uni Basel rules.

Application / Contact

Applicants should submit via our online recruiting platform:

- Motivation letter (max. 1 page)

- Full Curriculum Vitae

- List of scientific publications

- Contact details of at least two referees

We accept only online applications.

Please send your complete application by 20th October 2024. We will start interviewing candidates end of October 2024 and the position will remain open until filled. The preferred starting date is 6 January 2025.
