This position would be held in the School of Chemistry and Biosciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences, which has a well-developed reputation in novel applications of science in a wide range of disciplines. This role will advance the University of Bradford’s mission to drive sustainable, social and economic development through outstanding research and innovation, thus embodying the institution’s values of excellence and innovation.

What you will be doing:

  • You will work on the applications of mass spectrometry in characterising the structure and reactivity of novel aromatic compounds, encompassing three main themes:
  • Firstly, to extend the range of accelerated condensation and similar reactions in the microdroplets formed in a nebuliser.
  • Secondly, to extend the application of the Hammett equation to gain insight into these interesting reactions by exploiting intermolecular competition experiments, thus fulfilling the ambition of the University of Bradford to “Give Invention Light”.
  • Thirdly, to diversify the approach based on intermolecular competition experiments to include intramolecular competition experiments in which the relative abundance of two alternative fragmentations of a specific ion is monitored.
  • Further particulars of a more specific scientific nature are available on request.
  • Qualifications/ experience:

  • PhD in reactive mass spectrometry, or closely allied field, including practical experience of nebuliser synthesis.
  • Appreciation of competition experiments as a means of acquiring data, including practical experience of Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry.
  • Expertise in Physical Organic Chemistry, especially the Hammett equation, and familiarity with fundamental concepts in mass spectrometry, including simple cleavages and rearrangements that occur in the fragmentation of ions generated in mass spectrometers.
  • Understanding of proximity effects and other rearrangements that are mechanistically interesting and analytically useful in mass spectrometry.
  • Do not meet every single requirement? We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you are excited about this role but your experience does not align perfectly with everything in the job description or advert, we encourage you to arrange an informal conversation with the hiring manager.
