Postdoctoral Research Associate: Axon Regeneration and Neuroprotection In The Visual System

Department: Wolfson SPaRC

About Us

Wolfson SPaRC (Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre) is part of the School of Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London, located on the Guy’s Campus at London Bridge. Our mission is to understand the biological mechanisms behind neurological and sensory disorders and to develop new therapeutic strategies.

About the Role

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research associate to investigate new approaches for retinal neuroprotection and vision restoration. This research is part of a large project aimed at identifying and developing new treatments for glaucoma and spinal cord injury.

The role involves using preclinical models to test and develop gene therapy approaches for retinal neuroprotection and optic nerve regeneration, as well as utilizing cell and molecular techniques to study mechanisms controlling axon regeneration.

Collaboration with researchers and partners in London, Cambridge, and Stockholm (Karolinska Institutet) will be essential. The project focuses on Protrudin, a molecule critical for axon growth.

This is a full-time position funded by the MRC, with a fixed-term contract until 5 January 2028.

About You

We seek candidates with expertise in animal models of disease or injury, particularly in eye or neuro-biology. A PhD is required, along with a strong research track record.

  1. PhD qualified in a relevant subject area (or pending results).
  2. Experience with in vivo models of disease or injury, preferably in the visual system.
  3. Evidence of engagement in high-quality research.
  4. Excellent organizational and administrative skills.

Experience with:

  • Microscopy
  • Neuronal Cell Culture
  • Bioinformatics

Further Information

We embrace diversity and are committed to developing an inclusive culture at King's. Candidates should submit a CV and a supporting statement detailing how they meet the essential criteria listed in the advert.
