Job summary

The Medical Education Department is responsible for ensuring the delivery and quality management of education and training for approximately 1800 Junior Doctors (doctors in training and locally employed doctors) placed across all specialities within the Trust.

The post holder will work as part of a team of 3 Postgraduate Clinical Teaching Fellows (Medical or Surgical), involved in the development and delivery of interactive teaching session for core curriculum teaching programmes for all Doctors.

The post holder will support the development of a teaching VLE (virtual learning environment) and ensure all Medical Education online learning packages, including Medical Induction are up to date and evidence based. They will also be required to support the Postgraduate Medical Education teaching leads in the development of new teaching innovations registrar shadowing.

This post will offer excellent organisational and direct teaching experience at the Postgraduate level along with the opportunity to work towards a qualification in Medical Education.

This position would be an ideal career opportunity for a doctor who has completed Core Training and is awaiting entry into a specialist training programme.

This position will work 80% of the role within Postgraduate Medical Education, and 20% of the role working within a Speciality (Clinical Environment / Department) to maintain your clinical competencies.

Main duties of the job

It is expected that 80% of the post holder's time will be given to their educational responsibilities which include:

*To support Postgraduate Medical Education by providing direct teaching to junior doctors. This would be in the form of lectures or small group seminar work but also via structured bedside teaching or drop in clinics.

*To ensure all learning materials, junior dr handbooks as well as medical induction content are up to date.

*To lead on the development and implementation of interactive teaching and learning opportunities for junior doctors.

*To support clinical or surgical skills teaching to junior doctors in close collaboration with the Clinical Skills team.

*To support the Simulation Faculty with high-fidelity simulation training to the junior doctors. All the post holders will be trained as Simulation Faculty.

*To act as the clinical co-ordinator for any PACES or mock PACES hosted by the Trust. To lead on the identification and recruitment of suitable patients for these examinations, and to either examine or attend the exams to take care of the patients and support the examiners.

*To support the Postgraduate Medical Education teaching leads in the development of new teaching innovations registrar shadowing.

*To work closely with the Postgraduate Medical Education teaching leads to audit, develop and improve the teaching offered by the Trust. This may be through an audit or piece of research into the teaching activities.

Job responsibilities

*To work closely with the Postgraduate Medical Education teaching leads to provide the required feedback through the HEE Quality Assurance process.

*To work closely with the Postgraduate administration team to ensure co-ordination of all teaching programmes runs smoothly.

*To be prepared to troubleshoot or stand in should some teaching be cancelled at the last minute.

*To provide support and advice to junior doctors who are involved in teaching Medical Students and Physician Associate students.

*To provide pastoral and mentoring support to junior doctors and to complete a Mental Health First Aid course

*To undertake some form of formal training in Medical Education and teaching methods. Places are held on the University of Birmingham PG Certificate of Medical Education course for all the Clinical Teaching Fellows associated with their Medical School. It is expected that you will attend this course and this will be supported through leave and course fees by the Trust

The remaining 20% of the post holder's time should be used to ensure that clinical practice is kept up-to-date and to undertake a programme of continued professional development. The nature of this will be negotiated with the successful candidates. This is arranged to fit around the Postgraduate teaching responsibilities.

The post holder would also be expected to:

*Support local induction for junior doctors within Specialities

*Signpost and support new medical and medical student starters within Specialities

*Support departmental teaching and junior doctor forums

*Be an advocate for Medical Education within specialities

  • *Experience of working the UK Health Care system.
