Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to our strategic direction by leading and shaping our world-changing and internationally-competitive research and transnational education, provide high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, secure research funding, and provide academic leadership and management within the School/GC UESTC/College. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. The teaching responsibilities of this post will be delivered from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) campuses and will require you to live and work overseas in Chengdu and Lingshui Li’an, China, for the equivalent of at least one teaching semester per year (typically 18 - 20 weeks). Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Lead, develop and maintain a coherent research programme in the subject area and, as appropriate, lead or contribute to external research funding applications of international standard, participating actively in the development of School and College research strategy.2. Maintain a track record of publications of international quality in leading peer reviewed journals or with a scholarly press to enhance the international profile of the subject area.3. Play a leading role in the planning, organisation, development and delivery of the curriculum within engineering including developing research-led courses and new teaching materials and methodologies and adopting inclusive learning approaches which recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort.4. Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.5. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties, e.g. learning support/problems, including actively engaging with potential research students of high calibre intending to undertake postgraduate and doctoral research, building effective working relationships and supervising to completion.6. Maintain an external profile by attending and participating in appropriate research seminars/conferences within the subject area, including developing an external role in national and international societies, peer review or editorial process, and/or equivalent organisations and roles.7. Lead the development and maintenance of the subject area’s reputation with key stakeholders including developing links with relevant national and international organisations with a view to enhancing research and teaching, and knowledge exchange.8. Take on a substantial administrative or management role within Glasgow College, as assigned by an Executive Dean, and the wider School.9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.10. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.11. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan Strategy 2025: World Changers Together. For appointment at Grade 10: 12. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities across the School and College in a manner that enhances the student experience, ensures programmes are internationally benchmarked and of international standing, and that values and supports a culture of enhancement.13. Take a leading role across the School and College in relation to strategic learning and teaching initiatives through: embedding a research-led, evidence-based ethos in teaching and learning; leading on teaching collaborations and teaching innovations; and influencing teaching and assessment practices and policy across the School/College. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge and Qualifications Essential: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.A2 Membership of a relevant professional body or commitment to achieving professional status within two years of appointment. For appointment at Grade 10 (Professorial), in addition to the above: A3 An established and internationally-recognised reputation for high-quality research and knowledge exchange in subject specialism, seeking and securing external grant funding for a portfolio of research projects and mentoring early career staff to support their development in securing funding.A4 A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/RI/Service/College level.A5 Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions. Experience Essential: E1 An established strong national and international reputation in a field of research within the subject area, with potential for significant further growth in the research field and substantial future funding opportunities. The research field should also fit with the strategic plans of the University.E2 An strong track record of publication of high quality and impact in leading international journals.E3 An sustained record of gaining considerable research grant funding or equivalent.E4 Extensive experience of delivering and leading teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level in engineering or a cognate discipline.E5 Experience of supervising staff and/or students and of providing leadership to others.E6 Experience of successfully managing research projects and grants.E7 Contributions to scientific/learned societies. Whilst your post is based at the University’s main campus in Glasgow the teaching responsibilities of this post will be delivered from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) campuses and will require you to live and work overseas in Chengdu and Lingshui Li’an, China, for the equivalent of at least one teaching semester per year (typically 18 - 20 weeks) and, if appropriate, at any other of the University’s overseas bases, or elsewhere as may be required in order to discharge your duties.
