Reader/ Professor in Geotechnical Engineering

We are delighted to be recruiting a new colleague at Reader/Professor level in Geotechnical Engineering in the within the Faculty of Engineering. You will have research interests which complement the research of current academic staff in our Geotechnics Section, demonstrated by your research portfolio and a research statement (2 A4 pages) that should be included as an attachment to the job application. 

The is one of the largest and most successful Geotechnical research groups in Europe, with a wide ranging and high quality programme of research and teaching activities that focus on both fundamental and applied aspects of Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology.


You will plan, resource, and direct an original and impacting research programme in Geotechnical Engineering, conducting research projects on your own and developing collaborative projects with other members of the Department and College and with external collaborators. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research can:

  • Address the challenges of delivering low carbon energy,
  • Mitigate the risks posed by climate change,
  • Contribute to develop sustainable resilient infrastructure, or
  • Address the UN sustainable development goals.
  • You will also contribute to undergraduate and taught postgraduate teaching in Soil Mechanics / Geotechnical Engineering, considering our cluster of MSc Courses in Geotechnical Engineering in particular.


    You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field and an expertise and national reputation in geotechnical engineering (international at Professor level). 

    In your application (including the 2-page research statement), you will also provide evidence that your research can contribute to

  • Address the challenges of delivering low carbon energy,
  • Mitigate the risks posed by climate change,
  • Contribute to develop sustainable resilient infrastructure, or
  • Address the UN sustainable development goals.
  • You will demonstrate a clear vision for how you will develop your research at Imperial and present ideas on how you would obtain funding to support this vision. You will present (via your cv) a portfolio of research publications confirming national standing (international at Professor level). 

    Evidence of your ability to contribute to undergraduate and taught postgraduate teaching in soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering is essential. This should be communicated via a 2-page teaching statement you will include as an attachment to the application.
