Research Assistant/ Associate in Understanding the Mechanisms behind Bubble Dynamics in Electrolysis (Fixed Term)

Publicerad 2024-10-18

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Nanoscience Centre at the Department of Engineering, to work on BP-ICAM-funded research into the mechanisms behind H2 and O2 bubble nucleation and their subsequent dynamics.

In particular, we are looking to understand the factors influencing bubble formation and attachment to electrode surfaces in alkaline electrolysers, as ultimately this limits the efficiency of the electrolysis process. Whilst using a combination of AFM, SEM, and EDX, we aim to unravel the nature of the interactions between these bubbles and the surfaces and the electrolyte.

The key responsibilities and duties are to carry out lab-based research and write corresponding reports.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are that the candidate must have obtained or is close to obtaining a PhD in Physics, Chemistry or related subject. Experience with AFM is essential, and with other surface analysis techniques desirable, as is knowledge of electrolysis and electrochemistry.

The post holder will be located in the Nanoscience Centre in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges:

Research Assistant: £31,396 - £33,966Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
