About the role

We are seeking a Research Assistant in Bioinformatics to work on mitochondrial disease research and diagnostics. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside clinicians on re-evaluation of existing WGS datasets and towards development of innovative pipelines for new datasets from WGS, RNAseq, and Long Read Sequencing. You will also work closely with a patient charity and make a difference in patients’ lives by applying cutting edge science.

You will benefit from a highly supportive supervisory environment, working closely with a Senior Bioinformatician and an experienced Principal Investigator in mitochondrial diseases. You will support our activities by extracting and analysing clinical, phenotype, and genomic data from various sources. You will also work on pipelines for analysing variants for suspected mitochondrial disease, which will involve applying existing pipelines for filtering and interpretation of variants in NGS data, and long read and transcriptomic data.

The post is available immediately and is funded by the Lily Foundation for one year in the first instance with potential for further extension.

About you

You will have a BSc in Biological Sciences (or a related discipline) and a MSc in Bioinformatics, as well as experience in complex data analysis.

Familiarity with basic Linux commands, the ability to write Python scripts to interrogate and extract information, and to use R and read tabular data is essential, as are good communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Starting salary in the range of £38, - £41, inclusive of London Allowance, subject to skills and experience.
