Research Assistant -J-PAL Europe/ EVAL LAB
Summary of the Organization:
J-PAL is a global research centre with a network of over 350 affiliated professors practising random assignment impact evaluation. J-PAL Europe is based at the Paris School of Economics. The office conducts randomised evaluations, develops partnerships around evidence-based public policies and helps to generalise programmes that have been shown to be effective.
Presentation of the Research Project
In collaboration with EVAL-LAB, which also specialises in impact assessment, J-PAL is carrying out a randomised controlled evaluation of a programme to make digital kits available to primary schools in the Kédougou region of Senegal. A kit contains a set of tablets and computers, as well as a connected hard drive filled with educational content for teachers and pupils. The evaluation is being led by Luc Behaghel (J-PAL, Paris School of Economics), Simon Briole (University of Montpellier), Mathilde Col (University of Bordeaux) and Quentin Daviot (EVAL-LAB). The evaluation began during the 2023-2024 school year in 140 schools (70 beneficiary schools and 70 comparison schools) in the three departments of the Kédougou region. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, a new evaluation school year (2024-2025) is being organised. The person recruited for this position will work with the J-PAL and EVAL-LAB teams to organise the implementation of a new data collection at the end of the school year (May/June 2025), as well as working on the data.
Responsibilities :
Data processing and statistical analysis
Analysis of data from the first school year of evaluation (questionnaires, observations, administrative data, implementation data).
Cleaning and analysis of the data to be collected for this new wave of surveys.
Link with the Ministry of Education to collect administrative data.
Participation in the construction and presentation of the main results.
Setting up the end-of-school-year survey
Design and improvement of questionnaires: literature review, search for scales to measure cross-disciplinary skills.
Link with the Ministry of Education for the construction of student tests.
Reflection on the creation of data collection protocols.
Participation in the training of investigators.
Visiting schools in the Kédougou region to understand how the kits are used and piloting questionnaires.
The person recruited will carry out one or two field missions in the Kédougou region. This person will work under the supervision of the project researchers.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in economics.
Fluency in written and spoken French (required).
Appetence for project management with numerous partners and short deadlines: rigour and organisation in work (required).
Excellent communication skills with institutional and association partners.
Proficiency in Stata.
Econometric knowledge applied to randomised controlled evaluations.
Curiosity and willingness to learn how to conduct large-scale randomised controlled evaluations.
