Join our team as a Research Assistant or Associate to drive cutting-edge sustainability research and be at the forefront of pioneering innovative tools and methods. You will have the opportunity to apply systems thinking to address pressing sustainability challenges with a focus on assessing Hydrogen Production Technologies through life cycle assessment (LCA) and participatory processes. All whilst collaborating closely with Professor Nick Voulvoulis and a dynamic interdisciplinary team to drive impactful research at the esteemed Centre for Environmental Policy. We are searching for an individual with proven expertise in LCA, eco-design, and the circular economy to contribute to ground-breaking sustainability initiatives.

You will lead the development of tools and methods aimed at applying systems thinking to solve sustainability challenges. This unique role involves assessing the sustainability of Hydrogen Production Technologies through life cycle assessment and participatory methods, contributing directly to the transition to sustainability.


You will be responsible for planning and carrying out research aligned with the project goals, collaborating closely with Professor Nick Voulvoulis, his postdocs, and the project's partners.

You will analyse large datasets, applying suitable techniques for integration and visualisation. In addition, you will assist in writing research reports, preparing publications for refereed journals, and contributing to external funding applications.

As a member of the Centre for Environmental Policy, you will be joining a unique interdisciplinary Department in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, conducting policy-focused, fundamental, and applied research to solve environmental and sustainability issues. Research at the Centre tackles a wide range of environmental topics with an emphasis on informing public policy and ensuring the commitments made by government, businesses and civil society can be upheld.


  • Research Associate: Hold, or near completion of, a PhD (or equivalent) in Sustainability or Environmental Management or a closely related discipline.
  • Research Assistant: Hold a first degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a closely related discipline.
  • You should have a strong background in environmental science, environmental technology and systems, with experience in Life cycle assessment (LCA), with an established ability to perform LCA tasks using software, such as SimaPro or GaBi.
  • You should have practical experience in a broad range of other research techniques including Sustainability and Environmental Risk Assessments
  • You should have proficiency in mathematical modelling and related statistical procedures (using GIS, Python or R or other programming languages)
  • You should have excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication.
