Research Associate - Assurance for Robotic Autonomous Systems

The School Computer Science invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed term post of postdoctoral research associate (PDRA), tenable from 1st April 2025 until 30th September 2027 to join the Autonomy and Verification Research Group. We are looking to appoint a PDRA with expertise in the verification, validation and assurance of security for computational and/or robotic systems. The successful candidate will have a research background in one or more of the following areas:

  • Formal Methods and Verification
  • Certification and Assurance
  • Security issues around new technologies such as Robotic Autonomous Systems
  • Crucially, the candidate will have an interest in working with regulatory and certification bodies and industry to develop routes for the assurance of Autonomous and Robotic Systems. The successful candidate will work with Dr Louise Dennis, (University of Manchester; Autonomy and Verification, Department of Computer Science), Prof Michael Fisher (University of Manchester; Autonomy and Verification, Department of Computer Science), and a Representative of Amentum. They will work on the Assurance work-package of the CRADLE project led by Prof Michel Fisher (University of Manchester; Department of Computer Science). 

    CRADLE is a collaborative activity bringing together the industrial experience that Amentum have in applied Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) with the research expertise at the University of Manchester in this field, to create an internationally leading research centre that is sustainable in the long-term. Our vision for CRADLE is that it will deliver novel and transformational RAS technology for demanding environments, such as space, nuclear, energy generation and urban infrastructure, allowing the benefits promised by this technology to be realised across wide sectors of UK industry.
