Research Associate for Investment in Places Productivity Campaign, TPI Productivity Lab

Organisation: The Productivity Institute brings together world-leading and UK experts from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, working directly with policymakers and businesses to better understand, measure, and enable improvements in productivity across the whole of the UK, with the aim to improve living standard and well-being.

Role: Act as liaison between the TPI Productivity Lab and the research team on “Investment in Productive Places Campaign” (IPCC) and relevant members of the team to develop a data tool for the project, support research and report writing in this area.

Reporting: The Research Associate (RA) is appointed as a member of the TPI Productivity Lab and reports to its Director, Prof. Raquel Ortéga-Argilès. The RA is fully seconded to the IPCC team and has a dotted reporting line to the project manager, Dr. Marianne Sensier.

Location: Manchester (with possibility for partly remote working).

Length of contract: 1 FTE for 12 months, from 1/11/24 to 31/10/25, with possible extension.

Key responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyse key data on local government expenditure, employment, growth and productivity, and other metrics related to wellbeing and living standard at place-based level.
  • Develop a flexible tool to make data accessible to policy makers and other stakeholders to help them to design, monitor and evaluate policy interventions, as well as projections for scenarios.
  • Develop web-presence, infographics, dashboards and other communication materials for the project.
  • Conduct research on investment, growth and productivity at the subnational level, notably at local authority level.
  • Support the writing of reports and the preparation of other deliverables for meetings, etc.
  • Participate in other activities of the Productivity Lab.
