Publicerad 2024-11-27

An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on a funded research project on Additive Manufacturing in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The project will involve the analysis, design and simulation and testing of metal 3D parts suitable for use in the construction industry, with particular emphasis on fracture modelling and the modelling of connections.

This is a fixed term appointment for 6 months.

You will carry out research programmes to investigate the behaviour and design of 3D printed elements. The project will involve finite element modelling using the software ABAQUS, the development of analytical models and the establishment of statistically verified structural design rules, suitable for use in practice. There will be a particular focus on fracture modelling and the modelling of connection behaviour.

  • A Candidate who holds a PhD in structural engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience, as well as an excellent honours degree and ideally MSc in Civil/Structural engineering*
  • Previous experience in use of optimisation methods
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and 3D printing
  • The ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
  • A creative approach to problem-solving
