Research Associate in Atomically Thin Capillaries

Applications are invited for a research position within the condensed matter physics group in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of researchers, who have been at the forefront of 2D materials research since the discovery of graphene in 2004, and will work on a series of projects relating to graphene and other 2D materials, funded by the EPSRC and a range of other international funders.

The post is available immediately for a period of up to 12 months with a possibility of a further year’s extension, and will focus on the investigation of the fundamental of molecular transport through capillaries made from 2D materials and heterostructures which will lead to technological development of 2D materials devices.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in experimental work on physics, condensed matter physics, chemistry, materials science. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in ionic conductance/molecular permeation measurements and fabrication of heterostructures from 2D materials. Applicants will have substantial knowledge and experience of fabricating devices based on 2D materials and be able to perform sensitive electrical and electrochemical measurements. Experience of working with precision electrical measurements is desirable, as is excellent technical ability across a range of fabrication and characterisation facilities. Candidates should also be well-organised and self-motivated with excellent communication skills. A strong publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals is essential.
