Research Associate in Elastodynamics/ Structural Dynamics (Fixed Term)

Publicerad 2024-10-15

A position exists for a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering's Dynamics and Vibration Research Group, to work on the QuieterRail project.

QuieterRail is a collaborative, 16-partner, EU-funded project that aims to introduce a step change in predicting and mapping railway noise and vibration, in the acceptance testing of rolling stock, and in promoting cost-effective noise mitigation. The Cambridge contribution concerns the development of a fast-running, vibration prediction method for urban situations, which will be implemented in a GIS-based environment to allow mapping of vibration alongside noise. A key aspect of this work is to develop building correction factors to characterise vibration and re-radiated noise in buildings as part of an established hybrid prediction method. The work will include numerical modelling of building structures and their foundations, under a range of different ground conditions.

The key responsibilities and duties are to:

-Develop building correction factors to characterise vibration and re-radiated noise in buildings-Extend a numerical database to include a wide range of building taxonomies and to provide a methodology to select results from this database-Liaise and work constructively with project partners as part of the wider collaborative project-Plan and organise research and reporting

The key skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

-Applicants must have a PhD in in Mechanical or Structural Engineering-Numerical modelling skills, e.g. boundary elements, finite elements-Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: elastodynamics/structural dynamics, modelling of ground-borne noise and vibration, building structures and foundations-Strong communication skills-Evidence of potential to produce high-quality research outputs, including the development of own models and the writing of research publications -Experience of managing own workload, meeting deadlines and the ability to constantly update knowledge

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, UK.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD

Salary Range: Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
