Research Associate In Genetic Vector Control

Publicerad 2024-08-05

We are seeking to recruit a ResearchAssociate to work in a worldleading research group at theintersection of molecular biology and insect vector control. Youwill join the laboratory of Professor Andrea Crisanti based atImperial College South Kensington Campus.

Ourresearch is based on cuttingedge molecular biology and genetics tounderstand and ultimately control the mosquito vectors of malaria. Our current focus is on developing and improving vector controlstrategies mainly based on gene drive systems and effectivelyreducing the population of Anopheles mosquitoes which are carriersof malaria. Our cuttingedge technologies are designed to fall intothe category of population suppression strategies that specificallytarget the reproductive capability of mosquito populations. Thisinvolves inducing sterility in female mosquitoes and a bias towardsmale offspring.

Duties andresponsibilities

You will play akey part in taking initiative in the planning as well as conductinginnovative and autonomous research working as part of a large teamwithin the Crisanti group. The group is actively involved in theTarget Malaria research consortium which is focused on developingconstructing and testing cuttingedge genetic approaches and youwill be expected to collaborate with other allied scientists withinImperial College and elsewhere in London and abroad asappropriate.

The Crisanti group has maderemarkable advancements in the areas of mosquito transgenesisgenome editing and gene drive research establishing themselves aspioneers in this field. You will be required to attend relevantworkshops and conferences as necessary contribute to thecompilation of reports for submission to research sponsors andprovide guidance to other staff and students.

Essentialrequirements

  • You musthold or be near completion of a PhD in in molecular biology or aclosely related discipline and practical experience within aresearch environment along with a track record of publication inrelevant and refereed journals.
  • The postrequires Practical experience with molecular cloning (GibsonAssembly Golden Gate similar protocols) mosquito husbandry analysisand interpretation of DNA and RNA sequencingdata.
  • Experience with molecular approaches topopulation control of mosquito disease vectors is also essential asis demonstrable knowledge in molecular biology and geneticsstatistical procedures and CRISPRCas9 systems.
  • Knowledge of data science and programming processes including R andmodelling programs is not required but would be anadvantage.
  • You must have excellent verbal andwritten communication skills. You must also be able to develop andapply new concepts and have a creative approach toproblemsolving.
  • The ideal candidate will havethe passion and drive to tackle and overcome scientificproblems.
