UKCEH is looking for an experienced Research Associate Meteorologist to join our team of talented individuals, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.
Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.
As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:
A Research Associate opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate Meteorologist within our Climate System Group, based at our Wallingford Head Office. Lead by Dr Garry Hayman, the group study how terrestrial processes influence the global carbon cycle, and how fluxes of heat and water from the land affect individual storms and larger-scale weather systems. They seek to improve our understanding and modelling of the role that the land surface plays within the climate system.
As a Meteorologist, you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects the team are working on. With a particular interest in extremes (e.g. intense storms, heat waves, droughts), they make extensive use of satellite Earth Observation data alongside land and atmospheric models. You will support the investigation of how the land surface provides predictability for weather forecasts on the sub-seasonal to seasonal timescale and how that knowledge can be integrated to improve operational forecasting tools used in Africa (), and more widely.
This Research Associate position creates the opportunity for greater professional development within your first 3 years in post. Allocated development time is structured with a tailored training plan to enhance your skills, knowledge, and experience in an area of science we are seeking to grow. Alongside on-the-job training and self-guided learning, you’ll have access to online resources and in-person training courses.
You’ll be joining a cohort of Research Associates who are provided with additional support, program elements and guidance by our dedicated Early Careers Advisor. The aim of our Research Associate program is to grow our science capabilities and build the specialist, highly experienced and expert skillsets our organisation needs now and in the future.
Your main responsibilities will include:
You’ll help us to deliver scientific evidence to underpin adaptation to climate change and to provide guidance on the development of decision-support tools for governments and agencies in Africa. Within the role, there will also be an opportunity to develop broad land-atmosphere expertise with a specialisation in atmospheric modelling.
You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career, and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.
For this role of Research Associate Meteorologist , we’re looking for somebody who:
