Research Associate: New ways of working for adult social care workers

The Department of People and Performance at Manchester Metropolitan University is based in its Business School and, drawing on innovative research and teaching techniques, offers specialist accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in human resource management, business psychology and sport business and marketing management. The centre is nationally and internationally recognised for its work in this area, with many leading scholars who hold prestigious research grants, publish in high quality journals and create substantial impact on policy and practice.

The role

The Department is seeking to appoint a Research Associate (Grade 7) to work as part of a National Institute of Health and Social Care (NIHR) funded project that investigates new ways of working for adult social care workers, with a particular focus on delegated healthcare .

The Research Associate will support the research team in undertaking a rapid evidence review and data design, collection and analysis. The project investigates delegated healthcare (or ‘blended roles') in the Greater Manchester Integrated Care System and will involve interviews with a number of stakeholders including health and social care leaders, district and community nurses, adult social care workers and those in receipt of adult social care services. The Research Associate will also contribute to writing the project report and producing a delegated healthcare toolkit. Much of the work will be in collaboration with external partners, including other universities and health and social care stakeholders and will require strong project management and good communication skills.

About you

You will have extensive experience of literature reviewing and qualitative research at doctoral or post-doctoral level, including arranging and holding interviews and analysing qualitative data. You will be proficient in the use of NVivo, Endnote and other relevant equipment, software and techniques. You will possess a breadth or depth of human resource management knowledge (including current practice). Knowledge of the adult social care system would be of benefit. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of effective project management and communication with a range of stakeholders and collaborators.

Essential skills

  • Hold or be working towards a relevant doctoral level qualification
  • Ability to synthesise complex data from different sources and communicate findings orally and via written reports and articles for a range of diverse audiences.
  • Ability to use initiative and judgement to develop appropriate techniques in order to facilitate research work and resolve problems affecting the achievement of objectives and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in the application of relevant equipment, software and techniques such as NVivo and Endnote.
  • Possessing sufficient breadth or depth of human resource management knowledge (including current practice), to work within the research programme.
  • Knowledge of the adult social care system would be of benefit
  • Research experience in the field of human resource management
  • Must have or be willing to gain a Disclosure and Barring Service certificate
