Research Director – Communications Team

London, Millbank

Verian (formerly Kantar Public) is one of the top tier social research agencies in the UK. We provide knowledge, evidence and insight that helps Government, the private sector and the Third Sector plan and care for society.

We are looking for a Research Director to join our growing Communications team, with expertise primarily in quantitative methods, but also ideally some qualitative experience. In this role, you will lead large-scale customer insight and tracking projects for one of our biggest clients, as well as Government communications evaluation projects across a range of topic areas. You will work with clients to advise them on strategic priorities, customer and audience insights and evidence of their campaigns’ or interventions impact; and help to develop and manage a talented and expanding team of researchers.

The Communications team conducts a wide range of communications development, campaign evaluation and customer insight research programmes, tackling issues in policy areas ranging from education to public health and environmental behaviours to the justice system. We work with Transport for London on a range of customer insight and marketing evaluation programmes, and have evaluated most of the Government’s flagship campaigns, such as THINK! road safety, Vaccines, Be Clear on Cancer, organ donation and Prison Officer recruitment. Our work is always interesting, it often involves sensitive issues, and it makes a real difference to the world we live in.

Responsibilities

  • Leading one of our largest client accounts, overseeing customer insight and communications tracking projects in the area of public transport, and managing teams to ensure delivery to time, budget and quality
  • Sustaining strong client relationships, being seen as a trusted advisor, and contributing to strategic account planning and development
  • New business activities – leading proposals and pitches, developing new client relationships, planning and contributing to profile-raising activities
  • Developing our offer by drawing on advanced knowledge and skills, creating new solutions, and training the team
  • Team planning and strategy, and skills and capability development across the team
  • Line managing one or more individuals, and supporting their work and development

Your profile

  • Expertise in quantitative customer insight and communications research, ideally with some experience of qualitative methods as well
  • Project oversight experience, with an ability to lead a research team to deliver excellent work to time and budget
  • Able to build trusted relationships with varied clients, understand their needs and priorities, help answer their questions and advise on solutions
  • Confident in triangulating data, finding the story in that data, and presenting this to clients effectively
  • Looking for innovation (in methods, outputs or ways of working) and resilience to challenge and be challenged
