Salary: £40,000-£54,616

This is an opportunity to take a lead role in delivering some of the highest quality social surveys in the UK, with a specific focus on longitudinal and cohort studies.  We are looking for an innovative thinker who is enthusiastic about survey design in a fast-changing data collection landscape where advances in AI, bio-measures, online data collection and data linking are changing calculations around survey best practice.

You would be joining a thriving team that currently runs the English Longitudinal Survey of Ageing (ELSA), the Five to Twelve primary school cohort study and the 1958 and 1970 birth cohorts among other studies. This role has a strong focus on new business development including responding to tenders and developing  grant applications. We collaborate with leading academics and other experts in a range of fields in developing our bids.. You would go on to lead resulting new studies.  We are a methods-driven team and are looking for someone with substantial quantitative survey implementation expertise and experience. We are also keen to make more use of the data we collect, both substantively and methodologically and are interested in what you can bring to the team here. 

Excellent survey research skills are essential, including in design, implementation and management.  You will be able to demonstrate a track record in delivering quantitative research projects to time and budget, and in developing strong relationships with clients, funders and collaborators. Experience of managing longitudinal surveys will be an advantage but is not essential – we are interested in how you can help NatCen develop the future of survey research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on proposals and applications for funding.
  • Manage and deliver survey and other research projects to high quality standards, budget and timetable. 
  • Manage project teams to deliver first-class research to meet client and collaborator needs. 
  • Provide advice, guidance and quality assurance for every aspect of the design, implementation, analysis and writing up of a study. 
  • Engage in impact activities to promote NatCen’s work externally. 
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of staff. 
  • Develop, manage and maintain client, collaborator and other stakeholder relationships. 
  • Maintain and promote high ethical and information security standards. 
To perform any other reasonable duties that NatCen may require that are consistent with the broad nature of the job. 

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • An undergraduate degree. 
  • Experience of directing social or market research survey projects and programmes.
  • A track record of securing funding for high quality social or market research. 
  • Demonstrable survey research methodological knowledge. 
  • Demonstrable skills in survey data analysis and communicating survey research findings to a range of audiences. 
  • Experience of leading, managing and developing teams. 
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage project budgets. 
  • Ability to work flexibly and proactively on multiple concurrent research projects. 
  • Commitment to building and maintaining good relationships with partners and customers. 
  • Ability to build, manage and sustain internal relationships successfully. 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with and influence client relationships and internal stakeholders.
