Where to apply
Requirements
Research Field Literature » European literature Education Level PhD or equivalent
Skills/Qualifications
- Organization of research and higher education in France and abroad
- Knowledge of ancient languages (Latin, Greek) and their digital processing
- Knowledge of XML and TEI standards
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Engineer will create a digital version of the lexicons forming the source texts of grammatical fragments, following the TEI-XML standard format. The text of normative manuals and works on meter, originally published by Keil between 1855 and 1880 (4,453 pages), and updated with more modern editions when available, will be provided by the CGL online corpus (Garcea & Lomanto ed. 2022), which already follows this standard. This will be combined with other source texts.
To avoid the risk of creating an excessively large corpus by accumulating all preserved materials, LiTeRA will not aim for exhaustiveness. Instead, it will focus on the analysis and use of the main works from two critical sub-genres that serve as sources for the fragmentary works:
- Lexicons: Festus (ed. Lindsay, 573 pages, XML available on The Packard Humanities Institute - Classical Latin Texts); Nonius (ed. Lindsay, 997 pages, only available in printed edition).
- Commentaries.
The Research Engineer will work on Festus and Nonius.
The constitution of the corpus will be significantly accelerated through the use of Optical Character Recognition (OCR), with the help of open-source software such as eScriptorium. An automatic post-correction process will be performed using Python libraries and machine learning-based systems. At this stage, both the OCR corpus and the XML files will require proofreading and a "pre-editing" process that is not automated, meaning a formal normalization that will not interfere with the editorial choices of the critical editions.
