Here at the World-famous Wellcome Sanger Institute, we have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, organised individual with a passion for problem-solving to join the Cellular Genetics Programme as a Research Manager.

The role will be a fixed-term contract for two years.

About the Role:

This crucial role assists our Faculty and their teams in delivering their cutting-edge research by providing efficient, professional and diligent operational and administrative support. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a range of internal stakeholders across the Institute, including Faculty, Legal and Governance, Grants and HR, in addition to a wide array of external collaborators, funders and other partners.

You would be joining a tight-knit Research Management team with a diverse range of backgrounds as well as the wider Institute Research Management Network both of which promote personal and professional development. This will give you opportunities to grow and build your potential and as a team who are highly focused on continuous improvement, there will be opportunities to engage in a wide range of initiatives.

Key responsibilities;

  • Providing comprehensive operational and research management support to the Head of Programme, Faculty and Associate Faculty members of the Cellular Genetics Programme, enabling them to deliver their ambitious scientific goals.
  • Managing the Faculty's Research portfolios, this includes grant and budget management.
  • Providing effective research management support by working closely with the governance and legal teams to obtain, manage and maintain appropriate ethical and legal approvals for collections of human or non-human material for research, specific to projects.
  • Working with and helping to maintain the project management tools within the team, such as Asana, and other records.

About You

You will be an efficient, self-motivated and energetic individual who can work independently in a dynamic environment with flexibility, adjusting to varying priorities and finding solutions to challenges that arise.

The ability to build effective relationships with members of the Institute and external partners at all levels is essential.

Your personal qualities will include professionalism, personal drive, trustworthiness and the ability to work collaboratively and facilitate effective communication between various stakeholders.

Strong project management and time management skills, as well as experience in handling budgets and producing high-quality financial and administrative detail for grant applications, reports and other briefing materials, will be advantageous.

Technical Skills:
  • Previous scientific experience or qualification
  • Previous experience working in a science Programme or equivalent environment
  • Previous experience in coordinating briefing materials across a range of subjects
  • Experience in producing, managing, and reporting on budgets
  • Knowledge and understanding of scientific third-party funding
  • Ability to apply project management methodology as required
  • Exceptional organiser with the ability to prioritise and manage workload
  • Good understanding of the governance and regulation of the use of human samples
  • Excellent IT skills, including Excel
  • Well-developed negotiating and influencing skills
  • Ability to write and structure reports
  • Excellent attention to detail

About Us

The Cellular Genetics Operations team supports the cutting-edge research of all Faculty groups within the Cellular Genetics Programme. By providing multidisciplinary support, we maximise the delivery and scale of our Faculty science, which is focused on mapping human tissues at scale. Cellular Genetics Operations comprises several teams supporting the following activities; research and project management, team administration, scientific writing, bioinformatics, laboratory support and sample processing and software development.
