THE ROLE

Birmingham School of Architecture and Design at Birmingham City University is a creative, diverse and interdisciplinary community of students, staff and practitioners exploring sustainable and inclusive design with our city, region and beyond. We offer Parts 1, 2 & 3 RIBA Validated awards and the Architecture programmes enjoy high student satisfaction with an established reputation in the historic Birmingham School of Architecture established in 1908.  You will principally be responsible for teaching on BA (Hons) Architecture and MArch (RIBA Parts 1& 2) contributing to the teaching of integrated design studios and be led by research informed practice with a strong emphasis on sustainable and inclusive futures. As a senior lecturer you will lead on areas of course development, student experience, industry and employability, quality assurance and course administration and be expected to contribute to research outputs.

Principal duties will include:  

  • Contributing to and coordinating the teaching, learning and coordination of the School’s r Architecture and Design programmes across different levels of the undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, including oversight of day to day operational processes (e.g. timetabling, assessment) and programme accreditation processes.  
  • Ensuring that programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University.  
  • Contributing to the development of academic processes across the institution.  
  • Assisting with the development of learning and teaching strategies. 
  • Participating in cross School teaching and learning activities such as the CO.LAB live project module, the Experimental Sustainability Studio, Parity Platform and/or Superstudio. 
  • Providing academic leadership to those working within programme area. 
  • Contributing to the development of teams and individuals.  Recruitment and Outreach activities. 
  • Undertake and contribute to research, conducting individual research or collaborating with others. 
  • Contributing to the Urban Cultures or Critical Artistic Thinking in Design (CATiD) research clusters.  
  • Occasionally contributing to teaching on our partner TNE programmes. 
  • Other duties may include course administration, module leadership, curriculum development and leading student trips.

Applicants will be expected to: 

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant area (or have taken their viva voce) or demonstrate equivalent core knowledge and expertise gained from leading edge practice in industry (essential). 
  • Hold qualifications in either Architecture, Interior Architecture or closely aligned sustainable design degree to at least Masters level (essential). 
  • Have experience of teaching and assessing student work at undergraduate level (essential).  Have a strong record of published research (essential). 
  • Have excellent and demonstrable design and communication skills (essential). 
  • Have collaborative and team working skills (essential); an inter- or trans-disciplinary approach is desirable given the range of disciplines in the School. 
  • Hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification or be accredited via the UK Professional Standards Framework for Higher Education (essential) 
  • Have the ability to contribute to other areas of the curriculum (essential).
  • An understanding of the nature of contemporary practice is highly desirable.
  • Capability to contribute to other areas such as technical studies, history, theory and cultural contexts, and/or digital representation would also be welcomed.  
  • Have climate literacy and knowledge of sustainable design (essential). 
  • Have experience in developing research funding proposals (desirable)
