Shooting and Story Researcher Pool, Rip Off Britain and The One Show Docs Unit Salford, BBC Studios

Publicerad 2024-10-18

Job Introduction

The Documentary Unit at BBC Studios is the home of high quality, thought-provoking and award-winning factual television. Powerful storytelling is at the heart of what we do - underpinned by real journalism viewers can trust. The Documentary Unit, Salford produces a wide breadth of content including The One Show and Rip Off Britain.

Rip Off Britain is the consumer-affairs powerhouse of the BBC Daytime schedule, and attracts a large, loyal audience of more than 1 million viewers, year in, year out. It mixes incisive consumer investigations, compelling human stories and invaluable advice; it holds to account the companies getting things wrong, leaving people out of pocket, or failing to make things easier for their customers.

The One Show VT team in Salford produces around 120 Current Affairs, Arts and Special projects films for BBC One’s ‘The One Show’ which remains the most watched factual magazine programme on TV.

We are currently looking for experienced Story Researchers and Shooting Researchers to join our Talent Pool for the Salford Docs Unit.

Joining the pool will mean that you will be offered work as and when opportunities arise. Appointment to the pool will not entitle candidates to permanent contracts with the BBC, those will have to be applied for in the normal way. The Talent Pool serves as a database of researchers who have the necessary skills and experience to work with us, and forms a group of candidates that will be considered as a priority should a (non-permanent) position become vacant.

Are you the right candidate?

Story Researchers

  • With attention to detail that is second-to-none, you’ll bring a story sensibility more tabloid than broadsheet.
  • You will be brimming with ideas for topical stories we should cover on the programme, and be an avid follower of news and current affairs to inform your ideas generation.
  • You’ll understand our audiences, and be happy to spend much of your time on the phone to members of it - getting to the bottom of their stories and bringing them on board to share their stories on screen.
  • You must have experience of casting for TV or radio, and working to tight deadlines. We’re a busy, fast moving department – so you’ll also need to convince us you’ve got the energy levels and resilience to stay motivated week in, week out, and the ability to juggle lots of stories simultaneously.
  •  You appreciate the legal/fairness sensitivities of telling certain stories.
  • Experience of finding contributors from a wide variety of sources and communities, with a commitment to ensuring breadth of representation.
  • You’ll enjoy presenting your stories to the wider team in pitching sessions.
  • Good writing skills
  • Shooting Researchers

  • You will be familiar with what it is like working out on location, week in week out, and be happy to be out on the road and on location most of the time.

  • A people person, you will be comfortable meeting contributors from all walks of life, able to put people at ease whilst you film them, often in their own homes.

  • Your technical skills will be second to none, meaning you think ahead as to what is required by your self-shooting director, supporting them to work quickly and efficiently.

  • Your shooting skills will be strong enough that your director can rely upon you to shoot second camera confidently, producing rushes of a high standard, suitable for transmission on BBC One.

  • You will be starting to develop your own style and visual flair, meaning you can offer GVs, cutaways and occasional sequences on location to augment the VT in hand.
